7 Kinds of Confidence Every Girl Should Have

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

We’ve all seen it, the girl that walks into any room and just seems to ooze confidence out of her pores.  Upon seeing this, you probably feel a little pang of envy and start to feel a little bit down about yourself.

But you shouldn’t.

You see, there are different kinds of confidence for every given situation, so just because that girl might be able to walk into class feeling overly confident because she did the reading the night before doesn’t mean that she has the ability to walk into a party and give off the same aura.

1.  How to Have Confidence in Who You Really Are
Sure, you may not have the same opinion as your roommate and you may not always be liked by everyone in the room, but that’s okay.  Being confident with who you really are means that you’re okay with not always being the center of attention.  When it comes to who you really are as a person, it is important for you to always stick to your morals because at the end of the day, after everyone else leaves, you are stuck with yourself.  And if you don’t know who you really are because you’re so busy trying to please everyone else, you’re very likely to end up very lonely.

2.  How to Have Confidence in Your Own Skin
From the time we’re young, we’re told that everybody is different.  As cheesy as it sounds, it’s true!  Each and every one of us has a unique quality that nobody can take away.  So whether you can’t keep your eyes open in pictures or you think your laugh is too loud, embrace it.  Next time you think your “flaw” is something to be ashamed about, remember that the person sitting next to you is probably feeling less than confident about her own quirks.  Next time you’re not feeling confident in your skin, walk with your head held high and remember that, in the words of Lady Gaga, “Baby, you were born this way”.

3.  How to Have Confidence in Your Style
If army pants and flip flops are all the rage, yet you can’t fathom being seen in anything other than your yoga pants, don’t think twice about it and just wear what you’re comfortable in.  People know when you’re trying too hard to fit in.  If you’re wearing something just because it’s the trend and not something you like, you’ll probably look incredibly uncomfortable and out of place.  Whereas, if you tend to stay away from trends and just stick to your own style, you’ll automatically look ten times better because you’ll be comfortable in your skin, which will make you radiate confidence.

4.  How to Have Confidence at ANY Party
There are always those parties that you have to go to.  Whether it’s a holiday party for your internship or a distant relative’s birthday, there are plenty of times where you’d much rather live in a far-away cave than have to go mingle with people you either really don’t know or don’t have any desire to get to know.  That being said, we still have to go to these events and once we come to terms with this, it becomes a whole lot easier to get through these parties if we’re confident.  So, the next time you’re dragged to a distant relative’s birthday party, walk in with a goal of getting to know at least one distant cousin (who knows, that cousin may have a great connection to someone at your dream job).  Instead of getting down about having to go to one of these boring parties, walk in with the intention of using this party as a way to better yourself.

5.  How to Have Confidence Around a Guy
A typical reaction after a cute guy unexpectedly says hi to you is to clam up and not know what to say.  However, what you should be doing is thinking of how awesome you are (yes, even if you just came from the Plex).  You should be smiling and saying hi back and thinking of how absolutely awesome it was for him to notice you, because after all it’d be stupid for him to not have said hi.  Sure, this may sound a little conceited, but honestly, if you don’t think highly of yourself, no one else will.

6.  How to Have Confidence Under Extreme Stress
We’ve all been there, it’s finals week and you don’t think you’ve ever been this stressed in your life.  Instead of letting the stress get to you, make an outline of all of the things you have to get done and put it in order of priority: most important to least important.  Then, give yourself a time frame for how long you have to get each task done.  By writing down everything that you have to do, you’ll automatically feel less stressed because it will be out of your mind and on paper (and everything seems a lot more manageable when it’s written right in front of you).  Once you start to get to work on whatever it is that’s stressing you out, just think of how great the outcome was the last time you put a lot of effort into something.  If this doesn’t work, take a deep breath and take it one step at a time.  Before you know it, you’ll have the stressful task behind you!

7.  How to Have Confidence in What You Think
It’s easy to back down from what you believe to be right when everyone else has a different opinion. But just because everyone else believes one thing, doesn’t mean that it’s necessarily the only thing to believe in.  Your beliefs are just as valuable as anyone’s.  Always stick up for what you believe in because even if people disagree, you’ll feel a whole lot better about yourself if you’re steadfast with your morals.

So, next time you start to beat yourself up about your lack of self-assurance, remember that confidence (just like beauty and basically everything else) comes in all shapes and sizes.
