6 Romantic Moments That Would Creep Us Out in Real Life

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Valentine’s Day is the perfect day for single Collegiettes to curl up on the couch and watch a good movie about a wonderful guy chasing after the girl of his dreams. Rom-Coms remind every girl that there are amazing guys to be found amongst all the weirdos and losers we surround ourselves with for much of the time. I mean, how many times have you watched The Notebook or Pretty Woman with a tissue in one hand and a carton of ice cream in the other and screamed at the TV, “Why can’t a guy do that for me?!” But, taking a closer look, some of these things would be just plain weird in real life. Take a look:

1. Mark’s posters in Love Actually

Arguably one of the cutest scenes in Rom-Com history, Mark stands outside of Juliet’s door to profess his secret love for her. However, one of the things we forget is that Mark’s best friend is Juliet’s husband. So basically, this guy throws all inhibition to the wind and selfishly tells his best friend’s wife that he’s obsessed with her. Imagine if Peter came downstairs and saw this going down! Talk about the ultimate slap in the face. Love who you want, but maybe in this case, keep it to yourself.

2. Noah jumping on the Ferris wheel in The Notebook

Pretty much everything in this movie is any girl’s fantasy. I mean, the guy stays with the love of his life even when she literally can’t remember who he is. But, their courtship started out in one of the most bizarre, unrealistic ways possible. Noah jumps onto a MOVING FERRIS WHEEL in order to beg Ally to go out with him. I take issue with two things: 1, that would require cat-like reflexes to hurl yourself at the exact right moment to catch the pole right in front of her basket and 2, at that point, the couple had never even spoken! Let’s at least add an introductory conversation into the mix before risking your life for the chance at a date. Imagine the guy that you locked eyes with at the last Mod party you were at throwing himself at machinery in order to take you out. Creepy, right?

3. The beach scene in Sweet Home Alabama

Who doesn’t tear up at that adorable, memorable quote? The whole movie, we are constantly rooting for these two to get back together and we are rewarded by that awesome scene on the beach where they had their first kiss as little kids. But hold the phone. Not only were they standing out in the open in the middle of a thunderstorm—but they did it twice. I’m all for that kiss in the pouring rain when everything seems to come together, but not if it could kill me! There should have been a moment where one of them decided it would be better to have this moment indoors, because I’d like to live another day.

4. The Vampire Opera in Forgetting Sarah Marshall

All our hearts were charmed when the loveable Jason Segel gets on stage and performs the hit number from his opera-in-progress about vampires. And Mila Kunis eats it up and we love it. But…the guy is singing the most depressing song ever, in a vampire accent, and complaining about vampire problems like Van Helsing and the inability to die. I don’t care how hysterical it is, there is no way that upon hearing this song, I wouldn’t at least be a little weirded out by a guy who made a move like this.

5. Lloyd Dobler’s Boom box in Say Anything

I just have to say that I appreciate my sleep more than anything. While his intentions are endearing, Lloyd Dobler stands outside of Diane’s window with a huge boombox that’s playing “In Your Eyes” by Peter Gabriel. It’s super cute in the movie, and while you’re watching it, you’re like, “Oh my god, I would love it if a guy did that for me!” But would you really? Diane made it pretty clear she was done with Lloyd, so he’s basically taking stalker to an entirely new, very musical level. If I was Diane, I wouldn’t be psyched I got woken up in the middle of the night for a stunt like this.

6. Ben’s Red Sox Obsession in Fever Pitch

Ben seems like a cute, nice, normal guy when Lindsey first meets him in Fever Pitch, and his obsession with the Red Sox destabilizes their relationship pretty significantly. But in the end, it all works out and we love the Red Sox just as much as we love the couple. But, can you imagine walking into a guy’s apartment and seeing everything, and I mean everything, relating to one thing? Having a passion or a hobby is cute and healthy; having your sheets, wallpaper, towels, and furniture all themed to match your passion or hobby? Psycho. I’m sure if we were in Drew Barrymore’s shoes, we would have hit the ground running away from him.

While I’m sure none of us are going to give up our love for these leading men, it’s safe to say some of these things need to stay in the movies.
