5 Ways to Sparkle This Holiday Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

I’ll confess… I’m a sucker for all things sparkly. In high school, I was the obnoxious girl who would wear outrageous hot pink glitter converse. I even went so far as to bedazzle my iPhone charger with purple glitter. It’s kind of a problem; just ask my family and friends. Luckily, I have learned to tame my glitter-obsession since being at BC. I have traded my bright, flashy sparkles for demure, tasteful shine. But every December, when the holiday season rolls around, I allow myself to embrace the glitz, glam, sparkle, and shine.

As Taylor Swift once sang on Saturday Night Live, “I like glitter, and sparkly dresses, but I’m not gonna talk about that in my monologue.” Whelp, I am going there. We are totally talking about glitter and sparkly dresses in this article. We might even talk about baking and things that smell like winter. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’ve got to watch the SNL YouTube clip below.

Alright, now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, get ready because here are five ways you can sparkle and shine this December!

1. Shimmer Up Your Outfit

The easiest way to brighten up a dreary winter’s day is by incorporating a little shimmer into your wardrobe. Here are two ways to embrace the sparkle this season. The first is through your outerwear accessories. Pick a pair of gloves, hat, or scarf with a slight shimmer, like this one:

December is also filled with holidays that pretty much require sparkly things. If you are looking for the perfect Christmas outfit or New Year’s Eve dress, then you have to look for sparkles. For Christmas dinner, go with a subtle shine, so you don’t blind your family. New Year’s Eve, however, is a different story.

2. Bake a Glitzy Treat

As promised, we are going to talk about baking (and things that smell like winter) in a true ode to Taylor Swift. It isn’t the holiday season without copious amounts of baking. There are a million recipes out there that embody the essence of Christmas, but only a few incorporate the right amount of glitter. Here is our HC BC favorite, courtesy of The Chic Table. To add the sparkle, all you need is sanding sugar or some sparkly luster decorating pearls.

3. “Glitter-fy” Your Dorm Room

Leonardo Da Vinci once said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” So make your dorm room sophisticated by adding the simplicity of glitter. Consider making paper snowflakes and decorating them with glitter glue. Or try this awesome DIY project to make your glassware extra festive, courtesy of The Stitching Scientist.

4. Share the Glimmering Love – presents

It’s the season of giving, which inevitably means presents. Brighten up your packages by embracing sparkly wrapping paper, shiny ribbons, and glimmering gift tags. Who wouldn’t appreciate a bright, twinkly present?

5. Sparkle in Your Everyday Life

Sometimes we get caught up in the commercial craze of the holiday season and forget about what really matters. Be sure to take a step back this month and breath because the easiest way to sparkle this season is from the inside out. Let your inner sparkle inspire others and take these wise words to heart:
