The 5 Sweaters You Need This Season

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Similar to seasons, fashion trends come and go, but with fall in the air and temperatures dropping you can always rely on these five styles to keep you warm and looking fabulous.

1. Cable Knit

The cable knit sweater—if it isn’t already—should be a closet staple. These sweaters look great cropped with high-waisted jeans, oversized with leggings, or fitted with chinos or trousers. Granted, I might be a little bit of a shop-a-holic, but I think it’s absolutely necessary to have a cable knit sweater in at least a couple different colors. Neutrals are always a safe bet: cream, black, and navy can last for years and be worn with bright patterned scarves and accessories. Cable knits also look fun and fresh in bright colors like pink or red.

2. Fuzzy Fluffy Favorite

It is no secret that texture is a must-have this season, particularly fur, but definitely not limited to fur. Fuzzy sweaters have been around for decades, and they’re not going anywhere anytime soon. They’re not only super soft and adorable, they also offer the perfect amount of femininity to balance out motor boots and black skinny jeans. Lana loves them, and so do we!

3. Timeless Stripes

Another style that’s never going anywhere? Stripes. Thin stripes. Color block stripes. Pretty much any kind of stripes. Especially in New England, it seems like striped sweaters are the classic, go-to style under coats or jean jackets, paired with any pants (even a loud print trouser, if you do it right).  Navy and white nautical stripes are always a good choice, but loud, J.Crew-esque color blocking can offer a bright alternative.

4. Funky Graphic

With all the layers and dark colors, fall and winter wardrobes can grow pretty monotonous pretty quickly. The best way to combat the all-black all-gray outfits is with a great graphic sweater. Colorful patterns, fun sayings, and cute animal graphics not only spice up your outfit, they also can brighten up your day! Graphic sweaters also can be really funny. Who wouldn’t want to wear a giant pug-face sweater to liven up a Monday morning?

5. Oversized Turtleneck

Turtlenecks seem to be everywhere lately, in all of their glory. Tight, thin turtlenecks are great to go out in on chilly nights, but oversized, chunky turtlenecks are the real star here. With leggings and combat or riding boots, a huge turtleneck is warm, cozy and still looks put together.

I am a Political Science major and Women's and Gender Studies minor at Boston College. I am an RA on campus and am involved in the Student Admissions Program. Since I am from Florida, I can legitimately say that I love long walks on the beach. I also love getting lost in a world fabricated by a novel, there is honestly nothing better.
