3 Easy and Cheap Ways to Help Those Impacted by Recent Natural Disasters

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at BC chapter.

Ok, you’d have to be living under a rock to be unaware of the insanity that’s been going on lately. But, in case you are living under a rock, natural disasters have been pummeling North America.  Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Maria, Hurricane Irma, and the earthquake in Mexico City have had disastrous effects. The natural disasters have caused hundreds of deaths,  have damaged entire cities, and have left millions of people without power.  As good ole’ men and women for others, I’m sure you’re all looking for ways (big or small) that you can help the victims of these terrible disasters. As broke college students, though, most of you are unable to donate large sums of money to disaster relief sites.  Thankfully, there are several cheap (or free) things you can do to help:

1. Buy Beyonce’s remix to J Balvin’s “Mi Gente”

All proceeds from this song are being donated to hurricane relief charities for Puerto Rico, Mexico, and other countries affected by recent natural disasters.  Plus, this song is a banger. Party and donate at the same time!

2. Donate blood

This one is free and super easy.  Stay on the lookout for announcements posted by the American Red Cross of Boston College for the next drive or check out the Red Cross website to find a drive near you!

3. Donate clothes, food, and other items.

Plenty of local churches and community centers are setting up collection centers for desperately-needed disaster relief items.  For example, Karyopharm Therapeutics Inc., a pharmaceutical company in Newton, is asking the community to donate items including dry food, towels, clothes, and baby items to support those still affected by Hurricane Harvey.

However you decide to give back, just remember that every little bit helps!
