Tips for Winter Fitness

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Bates chapter.

We’ve all been there. We wake up, check the weather (if we’re lucky, we do this before venturing out to our first class), and realize the odds are stacked against any sort of workout for the day. Let’s face it…the bitter cold is a perfect excuse to bundle up, drink some hot cocoa, and forget about the mere definition of the word “sweat”. BUT, with hope, advice, and a little effort, everyone will be trading their comfy slippers for their sneakers in no time!

Tip #1: Your water bottle is your new BFF

It’s hard enough working out in the winter, so why make it harder with dehydration? While you’re taking notes in class, make sure to give your water bottle some love! I know it’s easier to forget about your new BFF when it’s not sunny and 80 degrees outside (ugh, miss those days), but make sure to drink up! Not only will staying hydrated keep you focused, you’ll be awake and ready to break a sweat later.

Tip #2: Think outside-the-box

Routines are fabulous, but sometimes the same old workout can zap any motivation left after a long day of college life. Mix it up a bit! If you don’t want to run on a treadmill, get your cardio in with Zumba, boot camp style classes, circuit workouts, spinning classes, or any other form of workout that won’t leave you feeling bored and tired. Tired is good…bored, not so much. One of my favorite kind of feel-good workouts includes a scenic run when it’s not *oh-my-gosh-my-toes-are-going-to-freeze-off* kind of cold outside, followed by a chillaxing yoga class.

Tip #3: Company is key

Lastly, find a go-to workout bud. So many experiences are better shared (think movies, concerts, meals), so why not throw exercise into the mix? You can collaborate on ideas for workouts, make a killer playlist together, and encourage each other towards health and fitness when both of you are just about ready to hibernate.

Now kick that warm blanket off, put that mug of chocolatey goodness down, and go break a sweat! *You can most definitely resume snuggly hot chocolate time post-workout*
