I am a believer, and you should be, too.

You may be confused and say, “Believer in what?”

Answer: coconut oil.

I was sad to find out that recently coconut oil is becoming “trendy.” The ladies are putting it on their cuticles because “Cosmo said it was supposed to help.”

You’re right, yes, it does solve all cuticle problems. What every girl (and boy) should know, is that it does a lot more than just produce pretty nails to bring to the spa.

I must give you a fair warning; once you become a believer you need to expect the following:

1.     No one will believe you

2.     Your friends will make fun of you (not the ones who become believers with you)

3.     Your family will make fun of you

4.     You become part of a secret society of all coconut oil users (because all the betches are doing it).

Thus, I present my coconut oil every day uses. Enjoy and proceed with caution, because once you start, you don’t stop.

Oil Pulling:  Every morning before you brush your teeth, swish a teaspoon of coconut oil around your mouth like it’s mouthwash. Do this for 10-20 minutes while you are getting ready. Sometimes I like to shower. Spit it out in a paper towel because, remember, the liquid that just melted in your mouth will solidify in the sink and clog the drain. Then brush your teeth. Within three days I guarantee you your breath will stop smelling. Coconut oil kills bacteria and because of this fun fact, it prevents cavities, gingivitis, whitens teeth, stops bad breath, heals and prevents mouth sores, helps with hangovers, gives you an energy boost (say goodbye to caffeine), and this list can go on forever. And I still have more things to talk about.

Infections: Coconut oil clears up infections or any type of open wound. If you have a paper cut, blood blister, wart, stye infection, cold sore, or pimple, rub some coconut oil on it several times a day and it will be gone before you know it. I promise.

Moisturizer: This is everyone’s favorite tip. Most commercialized lotions actually dehydrate your skin because it only provides immediate relief and doesn’t work for the “long term.” Commercialized lotions also age your skin faster (eek, I’m 21 and not ready to turn old). This is going to be hard, but it’s time to say goodbye to all of your fun flirty fruity scented lotions, because they are useless (sorry I hope that wasn’t harsh). Rub a small amount of coconut oil in the palm of your hand and rub it on your face. There is no need to use a lot; a small dab produces a large amount of oil. At first your skin might look oily, it takes a second to absorb into the skin. After about five minutes if your skin still looks oily, dab the excess oil off with a paper towel.

Feel free to moisturize your entire body. Coconut oil helps with eczema and other skin conditions. Your skin becomes baby soft within a couple days if you moisturize morning and night. When you shower you wash off all your natural oil necessary to protect your skin. Coconut oil restores this oil leaving your skin healthy and strong. Using coconut oil as a face moisturizer prevents breakouts, blemishes, and scarring. It leaves your skin with a wonderful glow. Fun fact: I haven’t broken out once since I started using coconut oil on my face.

Coconut Oil Face Wash Recipe:

1 tablespoon of coconut oil

1 teaspoon of honey (optional)

3 drops of tea tree essential oil

2 drops of lavender essential oil

A dash of lemon juice for oily skin

Mix well and use for one wash like you would a normal face wash. Leave on for a minute before washing off.

Coconut Oil Exfoliating Face Wash Recipe:

Lather your face in coconut oil. Like drench it. Got it? Now, take a washcloth and soak it in steaming hot water. Put this cloth on your face until it cools to room temperature. Dab the oil off and let air dry.

Twice a week, massage two teaspoons of coconut oil in your hair at night. Your hair will look VERY greasy. This won’t stain your pillowcase. Wash the coconut oil out in the morning when you shower. Make sure to really wash your hair out. Sometimes it might still look a little greasy even after you shower. If this bothers you spray some dry shampoo in your hair and it will go away immediately. It takes about three weeks to start noticing a change in your hair. Conditioning your hair with coconut oil, softens your hair, hydrates your hair, heals dead ends, makes your hair longer, heals dandruff, and brightens your color.

It’s good to know that everything coconut oil does on the exterior of your body, it also does inside your body. If you consume 2-4 tablespoons of coconut oil daily, all the bad stuff floating inside your body goes away. That’s the easiest way I can explain it. I can go into how it helps with heart disease and Alzheimer’s, but then this paragraph would become too complicated. Let’s just say I’ve survived the flu and the Bates Plague.
