Name: Calvin Reedy

Year: 2017

Major: Studio Art

Hometown: Wilton, Connecticut

Dream job: Major photographer for a big editorial magazine for travel or pop culture.

Fave food: Food is way too important to me to choose a favorite, but I love all desserts and anything chocolate.

Dream date: Zendaya. She seems really cool and personable, and has such a great sense of style. I feel like we agree on a lot of social issues. I would definitely have to impress her because of her celebrity status, so maybe getting lunch in Paris and walking around the Louvre. (@Zendaya, please read this.)

Memoir: I spend a strange amount of time trying to come up with witty memoir titles about my life. One being “Life in Fifty Shades of Taupe” – I’m from a mixed race family and I’m drawn to natural tones and different shades of brown. Another one would be “I Was Going to Get Out of Bed but then I Didn’t” – I’m a serial offender of staying in bed way too long, missing breakfast, and being a few minutes late to class.

How would you describe yourself in three words: kind, confident, yet frazzled.

What do you want people to know about you: We’ll get along great as long as you don’t ask for a bite of my food.

Mantra: Let go, let God.

Favorite thing about Bates: The general kindness of the student body and the fascinating people Bates draws. I also love going to the Village Club Series to take a break from studying with live music and friends.

Least favorite: During the winter, sometimes I wish it weren’t it Maine. There’s seriously no saving the Maine winter.

Life role model: My parents.

Who you would bring back from the dead: Harriet Tubman

Commons crush: Is that weird to put online?

Favorite professor: Ned Harwood

What makes you different: I’m very confident in my sense of self, including what it means to be of both Black and White heritage. I’m also very connected to my Christian faith. I try to fearlessly be myself in every situation.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years: Hopefully living in a city with a vibrant arts scene, in an apartment or house with really big windows, lots of plants, and lots of art on the walls. I’m not really sure what my career will be like, but hopefully I’ll just be happy, married or engaged, but not with kids just yet.

Tell us a secret: I don’t share secrets

Who would play you in your life movie: The guy from Everybody Hates Chris

Go to pick-up line: I’m too awkward to even try a pick-up line.

One thing on your Bates bucket list: I want to get the “death by chocolate” cookie recipe from Commons

If you could tavel to anywhere in the world right now where would it be? India, to see the Taj Mahal.

You just won the lottery! What would you do with the money? Travel around on every continent. I wanna see more of Europe, I wanna see different places in West Africa, and I haven’t been anywhere in Asia yet. I would go to the major art museums in every city I pass through.

Life theme song: “Know Yourself” by Drake

If you had to to eat one food for the rest of your life what would it be? Death by Chocolate Cookies, so I can experience death by Death by Chocolate Cookies.

What superpower would you pick: Teleportation without people seeing me teleport, so I wouldn’t have to deal with pesky questions.

What’s your baseball walk-up song? “Pop that” by French Montana

Favorite drink: Nothing gets me like a really good mocha.

Favorite movie: Hitch

First thing you notice in a girl: Because I take a lot of portraits, I quickly notice facial structure right off the bat. Full lips are definitely a must.

Top three favorite qualities in a girl: social wokeness (this is a term that refers to a general awareness of social/ systemic issues, often pertaining to race), beauty, and sense of style

I'm a junior at Bates College majoring in politics with a double minor in French and music. I was born and raised in New jersey by fabulous parents from Madagascar. In my spare time, I enjoy trail runs, a fine espresso, and eating a lot of animal crackers. My favorite book is Jay Z's Decoded. When LifeTime produces my life story, Gabrielle Union will be cast as me (because she will never age). Young, black and gifted.
Jane is a senior at Bates College, majoring in English and minoring in History. Outside of class, she dances ballet and practices yoga, religiously listens to Dave Matthews Band, and is a firm believer that dark chocolate acts as a well-rounded meal.
