Winter Outfits for Every Occasion

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

It’s almost time to return home (or to some exotic, warm location if you’re lucky), and you know what that means! Countless holiday dinners, parties, and events that your parents signed you up for because “you havent seen the Smiths in so long, won’t it be nice!” And for every occasion, there’s a different required wardrobe – is it a cocktail dress kind of thing? Jeans and boots? Or my personal fav- PJs? Lucky for us, that means shopping. What better way to take advantage of the holiday deals? I’ve compiled my list of must-have outfits for winter, so you’ll be prepared for every occasion.

Brunch with the Girls

Ah, to be reunited with old friends! I don’t know about you, but brunch/drunch with my best girlfriends from home is the first thing I do when I get back. This is your chance to be casual, but cute – show off how much more fashionable you’ve gotten in your semester away! Opt for boots, a slouchy sweater, and a miniskirt or dress; festive, stylish, comfortable.

Christmas Morning with the Fam

This outfit is glorified PJs, and that is a-ok in my book! A christmas sweater set is the perfect way to be comfy while opening all your presents (ahhh!!!) but still look embarrassingly adorable in the pictures.

Internship/Office Party

This look is perfect for an office party, or some other holiday event where you have to keep it classy! Stick with an appropriate neckline and hemline, but dress it up with sassy shoes and accessories to keep it interesting!

Shopping Around Town

With the stress of finals, holiday shopping can definitely get away from us – which is why it’s way easier to hit the mall back home! But beware: you never know who you’ll run into. Probably that chick from high school you never liked, or the cute boy you always did. In that case, do you really wanna be in leggings and a holey tee? Step it up a notch with jeans, a plaid shirt, and sweater (btw you can definitely opt for boots instead of the heels pictured… wearing stilettos around the mall would actually be doing the most.)

Family Dinner

All the relatives coming for dinner? Keep it comfy and classy in a long sleeved dress and tights, and maybe throw on a scarf! – Grandma and Grandpa are not tryna see what you wear to the club.

New Years Eve

The moment we’ve all been waiting for! It’s a new year, so pull out all the stops – elevate your usual party dress by trying something in a fun print or texture. Now’s the time to wear a minidress in leather, sequin, or velvet… whatever will make you feel the most confident and sexy to celebrate a new year/new you!
