Tips For Having the Perfect Snow Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

Although we all thought our Finding Nemo days (and yes, that includes crying while watching it…every time), were over in the 7th grade, today we come to find that they are not. As storm Nemo sweeps through Manhattan, many of us are trading our plans to go shopping downtown, grab lunch with friends, and hit up the town (110th street-116th street) for dorm arrest, hopefully with some hot chocolate and Netflix. It can get a little depressing to be locked indoors all day, but not to fret! Her Campus has some snow day tips to make this the coziest and most enjoyable day you’ve had all week!

Set the mood

Light some candles, preferably with a warm spiced scent such as vanilla or cinnamon. Put up your Christmas lights (although Christmas is WAY in the past…if college walk can do it, so can you!). Lighting is essential to create the home-y environment to complement the falling snow out the window.

Set the soundtrack

The staple for any day or night at home is the sound of rain or a fireplace. Head to RainyMood and overlap the sound of rain falling on the windowpane with a “rainy day” or “snow day” playlist from 8tracks. Or if you’re feeling toastier, listen as the wood burns

Get Cozy

This is your chance to wear sweatpants, a sweatshirt, fuzzy socks, and a Snuggie wrapped around you and look perfectly normal. Relish in the opportunity to NOT do your hair, NOT do your makeup, and NOT look put together. Drake did tell you that with “sweat pants, hair tied chillin with no makeup on. That’s when you’re the prettiest, I hope that you don’t take it wrong”.

Satisfy Your Appetite

Bring out the water boiler and make yourself some tea or a hot chocolate. Today is the day for that home-cooked food you try not to eat regularly because it’s bad for you. Go for it. This means: macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese, a baked potato. Take a break from the salad bar and give your stomach a little lovin’. If you have baking supplies in your dorm, you can also take this down time to make cookies, bread pudding, or cupcakes.

Choose Your Attitude

Sometimes, it can be frustrating to be locked inside all day when you have things to do, places to be, and people to see. But look at this as a beautiful opportunity to slow down, get cozy, snuggle with the one you love, even if that’s just your stuffed animal (guilty as charged), and let yourself off the hook! Take this gift as an opportunity to do something you usually don’t have time to do–catch up on Netflix, write a letter to your grandma, journal, or—gasp! do homework! You can even turn off the lights and watch Finding Nemo–on a day like today, that’s more than acceptable.
