Sign up for Early Morning Classes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

Before college, everyone warned me against early morning classes. As an incoming freshman, I really trusted older college students’ advice and tried to plan my schedule in avoidance of early morning classes. Well, due to my poor registration time, I ended up in an 8:40 A.M. Italian class on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I was not too pleased with how my schedule had turned out, until classes began.

After living through this early morning schedule three times a week for a month now, I can honestly say it’s the best type of schedule to have. I set my alarm for 7:10 A.M; I will admit that I hate myself in the moment for doing this to myself. However, once I have my morning cup of coffee, I’m ready to begin my day. On Mondays and Wednesdays, I have European History after Italian, so I finish my day at 11:25 A.M., and it’s perfect. I have all afternoon to study. Even my Fridays aren’t wasted because I’m forced to get up early for class. After class is over, I’m already awake, and I go about my day rather than laying in bed all morning.

I despise my schedule on Tuesdays and Thursdays because I don’t have class until 11:40  A.M. I wake up late, lay in bed for a bit going through social media, and I don’t really eat a normal breakfast or lunch. Yes, I have brunch, but my days just feel undisciplined. I start the day off in such a lazy mode, and I end up getting to the dining hall too late to have a nice meal calmly before class. My mornings are gone, and I am never productive on those days. I guess my high school senioritis has vanished, and I am not into the lazy lifestyle anymore.

Next semester, I really hope to be in all morning classes because I’ve realized having an early morning schedule implements so much structure into my days. In college, it’s easy to fall into a lazy lifestyle. If you want to have productive days, I definitely suggest morning classes. You will get all your classes done early on in the day, and have so much time in the afternoons to do whatever needs to be done.

Every day in college can have significance whether it’s a fun, memorable day with friends or an intense study day, so don’t waste them lying in bed all morning.
