His Campus: Advice for Life in MoHi

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

Here’s installment one from one of Her Campus Barnard’s resident anonymous guys. Who is he? You’ll never know. But here you’ll find a dude’s take on the exact same questions we asked Dear Halle yesterday. To start, he answered some of our most common questions for how to do life on campus and in Morningside Heights. Some of his answers are super cute and definitely worth the read. Classic answer about Koronets though, dude. “ALWAYS end the night with a slice of Koronets”? We WISH this could be the case, man. But unfortunately, our metabolisms are not as friendly to us as they are to college aged boys. Read to the end of the article to find a link to submit your very own *anonymous* questions for our anonymous dudes to answer in the coming weeks! Nothing is too embarassing, weird, strange, or uncomfortable for them to answer.

Question #1: Its Thursday night at 11pm and I’m on 112th, how do I decide where to go and when?

Well, you’re in luck, because 112th is a prime spot to be in on a Thursday night. You’re right near any frat, dorm, or bar that you could ever want to go to or need to go to. This proximity means that a place to have fun and relax is right near by. However, it is too early for it to be Mel’s o’clock, so heading down to Mel’s or Cannon’s may not be the best move just yet. So, until the bars start to get busy here are my tips:

  1. Head to a frat party. Since Thursday nights are a big night for CU, odds are there is a frat party somewhere right near you. However, you may get turned away if it is a mixer with a specific sorority or if you don’t know anyone inside the party.
  2. Pregame with your friends, if you’re of age. Many people prefer to turn-up in their dorm rooms or apartments with all of their friends before heading on over to the bars. So, get together with some friends in Ruggles or Mcbain, and then head on over to the bars a little later
  3. Get a drink with a friend. Although some bars may be dead at this time, others, such as the Heights or 1020, always have a nice and relaxed group of people to hang with at this time. If you head to the Heights, always order a frozen Marg. If you head to Tom’s, get a milkshake.
  4. Whatever you do, ALWAYS end the night with a slice of Koronets.

Question #2: I met a guy last night and we exchanged numbers, but he didn’t text me back. What do I do?

If he has your number and he’s interested, he’ll text you. Odds are that he’s waiting an allotted period of time to text you, so that he doesn’t seem desperate to text you. And, if he doesn’t text you, then he doesn’t deserve you. You’re a beautiful person inside and out, and if a guy doesn’t appreciate that enough to text you within 48 hours of the number exchange, than he isn’t worth your time.

Question #3: I can’t keep up with the subway changes on weekends. If feels like the 1 is never running past 96th. Do I walk, cab, or just stick with the subway?

If you’re at 96th street station and trying to go uptown on the 1, then there are always boards with the arrival times of the next train time. If you can’t seem to figure it out, or the next train time isn’t for another 20 minutes, then walk back to campus! Morningside heights is a beautiful area, and the walk back to campus is only twenty blocks. However, if it’s raining, sleeting or snowing, hop in a cab. The ride will only be about $8.00, and in that kind of weather that money is well worth it.

Questions #4: What is the likelihood I will get into senior night on a given Wednesday night?

If you’re an upperclassmen, getting into senior night shouldn’t be hard at all. That’s the crowd that Bernheim and Schwartz expects to have, and they are typically welcoming of the juniors and seniors. If you’re an underclassmen, you definitely take a risk by going to senior night. B & S can sometimes be strict in regards to who they let in on Wednesday nights, and they know a freshman when they see one. However, no worries if you can’t get into senior night. Lionshead (on 108th and Amsterdam) has $2 beer night every wednesday night (and $5 shots of fireball), so this can be a great alternative to senior night if you’re still trying to turn-up.

Question #5: On the weekends, I always seem to end up at Mel’s or Cannon’s at some point during the night. At first it was fun, but now I’m starting to get bored. How can I change things up?”

Well, the first thing you need to realize is that you go to college in the greatest city in the world. NYC always has an endless amount of great things to do at night, whether it’s going to a club, attending a concert of one of your favorite artists, or exploring parts of the city you’ve never been to before. Another thing you should understand is that it’s the beginning of the school year, which means people are still trying to get back into the groove of things before they start trying new things. Give it a little time, and I’m sure you’ll see things start to pick up around campus, and also find your friends wanting to venture around different parts of the city.
