Campus Cutie: John Avendano, Your Fantasy Fencer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

Name: John Avendano

Hometown: Colts Neck, New Jersey

School and Year: Columbia College ‘18

Major: Psychology (Pre-Med)

Campus Activities: Varsity Fencing Team, Columbia College Student Council (Vice President of CC ’18), Global Brigades, Columbia Outdoor Orientation Program, Kappa Delta Rho

Describe yourself in less then ten words: Did you know I am a Division I athlete?

Favorite memory from your time at Columbia so far: On COÖP (Columbia Outdoor Orientation Program) fall trip my freshman year, we slept out on the lawns in front of Butler the night before leaving to go hike in the Catskills for 4 days. I was lying next to people whom I’d just met, yet we were playing cards and cracking jokes like we’d known each other for years. That night, I embraced Columbia as home.

Most embarrassing moment during your time at Columbia: I ran for Carman Hall treasurer my freshman year and made an “I’m Schmacked” parody video for my campaign, where I got all suited up and threw dollar bills at the camera to try and “make it rain.”  I lost.

Current relationship status: Single

What do you look for in a partner? Someone that actually enjoys hanging out with me… maybe even as much as I enjoy hanging out with them.

Three ways a person can win over your heart: Take the MCAT for me, like all of my photos on Facebook, bring me Chipotle burritos.

Give us your best pick up line:

Me: Hey did it hurt?

Girl: Did what hurt?

Me: You know, when you fell from heaven.

Biggest pet peeve: When people use being “too busy” as an excuse to not make hang out or make plans

Blondes, brunettes, or redheads? Explain your choice. Personality. No explanation necessary.

Favorite off campus hangout spot? Pressed Juicery

Favorite fencing sexual innuendo: Lead with the tip of your blade—start slow, finish fast.

Anything else you would like your fans to know: I was voted “most unathletic athlete” in high school senior superlatives, but was also voted “most likely to win the Bachelorette.” Make of that what you will.
