Our Girl Rising Screening: Recap

On Tuesday April 23rd, Her Campus Barnard had the lucky opportunity to show a free screening of the powerful documentary, Girl Rising, at Columbia University. We partnered with Columbia's Amnesty International, a student group with dozens of members who work to advance awareness about human rights issues on campus. This installment of Collegiette Cooking was inspired by a good friend of mine, who simply asked me, "What do you make for dinner every day?" Like many of you, she is beginning the process of weaning herself from her reliance on the dining hall, and isn't quite sure where to start.This is an exciting place to be, and one where I find myself practically once a week. The key for us as college students is to avoid overburdening ourselves with the idea that to cook for oneself, one must either make everything from scratch (and organic! and local! and nonfat!) or rely solely on expensive takeout.   Magic Mic{rowave} Meals We don’t all have the luxury of a suite kitchen (complete with limited counter space and unpredictable ovens!), but if you can get your mitts on a microwave here are some quick recipes. You may have more ingredients than you think (old bananas from Hewitt anyone?), but if not, West Side Market is open 24/7 (they were open during Sandy) and don’t feel shy to ask around- what kind of neighbor wouldn’t lend 2 tablespoons of sugar? On Tuesday night, join Her Campus Barnard and Columbia University’s Amnesty International for a wonderful screening of the new award-winning documentary Girl Rising! "Girl Rising" was shown at the famous Sundance Film festival and we have been given the exciting opportunity to host the screening in a more engaged atmosphere. The film is a moving and beautiful account that pairs Hollywood actress-narrators such as Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Selena Gomez with dynamic young female voices struggling to achieve their greatest potential as they face major educational inequalities.
