Best Cold Weather NYC Activities

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Columbia Barnard chapter.

Yes, we can all agree that New York City has got it all, but that all is definitely incomplete without the occasional uncooperative weather. That however, doesn’t mean that we have to bundle up and sit in bed watching Netflix all day. There’s plenty of culture, innovation, food and fun that you can experience despite that low temperature on your weather screen.

1. Go to a museum

This is probably my first go-to place if I need to spend a day out on a cold or rainy day. New York City is the Mecca for museums and institutions and most of them offer free admission or definitely a student discount! The MET is one of my all time favorites, no matter how many times you visit it always leaves you longing for more and wanting to go back. Otherwise, we always have the Museum of National History, the MOMA or even the Museum of Sex! There’s plenty the city has to offer.

2. Visit the Bryant Park Winter Village

Make the most of the ice-skating, winter goodies, and a good walk around Bryant Park’s Winter Village! Yum – warm desserts and hot chocolate in the freezing cold – life is perfect again.

3. Go to Chelsea Piers

Chelsea Piers has an amazing indoor Gold club if you’re longing for some activity, otherwise there’s always a ton of other activities including bowling and of course eating! PS. You don’t need a membership!

4. Go visit the United Nations

It’s one of the most underrated activities in the city, considering a lot of native New Yorkers have never visited! But it’s definitely an option and a lot of fun (however, it requires a ticket).

5. Watch a movie (or catch a Broadway show if you had a heads up and booked tickets in advance at the Tic)

Don’t be surprised if you forgot that movies can be watched outside of Netflix… what says a gloomy day better than a tub of warm caramel pop-corn and some soda with the latest movie?

6. Discover the history of the Rockefellers at the Radio City Music Hall

Yes, there is an apartment inside, where the Rockefellers offered Samuel Rothaf a place to live!

7. Enjoy an indulgent meal

There is nothing better than a good meal on a bad day – and New York City if full of amazing restaurants and places to dine! Whether you want to get brunch at The Smith, get milkshakes and frozen hot chocolate from Serendipity, or choose from a million options in the cozy Plaza Food Hall, there’s something for everyone.

8. Visit the Grand Central Terminal

Not only is this the opening location of the ever famous show Gossip Girl, it also offers tours and has variety of dining options such as the Oyster Bar and a few shops you could hit while you’re there.

I hope you have a great winter season and happy holidays in advance! I know when it’s 10 degrees outside you would probably much rather bundle up and stay in bed, but it’s important to take advantage of this amazing city!

PS. One last word of advice, most iconic landmarks and tourist destinations are less crowded during the winter – so it’s the best time to get out there and explore a slightly more peaceful NYC.
