Meet Comet Blecha ’18

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Augustana chapter.

It’s Week 10 here at Augie and I was lucky enough to sit down with Comet Blecha to talk about her junior year at Augie coming to a close. I become friends with Comet when we became roommates last summer. We both lived together AND worked together in the EDGE Center. That summer I made one of my best friends at Augustana.

Name: Comet Blecha

Year: Junior

Major(s)/Minor(s): Graphic Design and Art Major, Art History Minor

Hometown: Plainfield, IL

Campus Involvement: Women’s Cross Country and Track and Field, EDGE Center Project Manager, Her Campus Graphic Designer, ADs Vice President, Web Guild President, Honorary Chi Alpha Pi Sorority Member

Looking back, what has been your favorite part of your junior year?

Hanging out with Lil Lu of course!! And going to concerts with my friends. I saw LISSE at Codfish Hallow and the Chainsmokers.

Where did you live? How did you like it?

I lived on campus in Naeseth 1D. I love Naes. It was great having your own room and your own space to have friends over. We were able to host more things with friends in an apartment rather than a dorm. We would have brunch parties–those were super fun.

What was your favorite class you took this year?

My favorite class was my honors capstone. Mostly because I got to figure out more about myself as an artist. I attended a research symposium in Chicago and got to listen to artists talk about their art and were they get their inspiration. For my capstone project, I made a series of posters based on events that I attended throughout the year. The events ranged from local music events to aritst talks at Augustana. I would have weekly meetings with my advisor, Vickie Phipps, about my project and the direction I wanted it to go. I was really happy with the results of the project.

What is the most valuable thing you have learned this year?

You don’t have to know everything. When I attended the research symposium in Chicago, the artists talked about how their art is always a process. I’ve always thought that once you graduate, you know everything there is to know about art. After hearing them talk about their work, I realized that you can always learn things along the way. You’re always learning.

What do you look forward most to your senior year?

My New York Internship! I’ll be participating in a Study Away program in New York City during Fall term. I’m really excited to live in Upper East Side Manhattan, run in Central Park, and attend the art museums (shoutout to MoMA and the Met!)

Alright, time for some fun questions…

What’s the last thing you watched on Netflix?

Dear White People.

What’s your spirit animal?

Giraffe.

What is the last song you listened to?

Cleopatra by the Lumineers.

What is your favorite drink to get at the Brew?

A hot mocha.

Favorite place on campus to study?

Third floor by the windows in the library. Or the EDGE Center. Or the Observer office with Lil Lu.

Lu is a senior at Augustana College majoring in Graphic Design. She is a Co-Editor in Chief of the Augustana Observer and a Campus Correspondent for Her Campus at Augustana.
