What is your position on UPC? Assistant Director of the Fine Arts committee

How did you get started with UPC? Freshman year I heard about it during recruitment and tried out to be on the fine arts committee because I love all kinds of art and crafts. Then last spring I tried out to be an assistant director because I wanted to be more involved in the event planning aspect.

What do you do in your position? I plan events for my committee starting my working with the other directors and committee to brainstorm ideas, then I contact people to plan it. This can be anywhere from an artists agent, like Dan Henig, to working with other on campus organizations. Then we order supplies, book the venue, make a day-of timeline, and publicize via social media, concourse hours and hanging up posters. I also encourage people to come to events and tell them about other UPC events. I’ve hosted Open Mic Night and done Eagle Eye interviews during and before events such as our songwriting showcase featuring Teddy Geieger.

How excited were you to work with Teddy? It was so much fun! He was so down to earth and really cool and complemented me on my cardigan! I met him at NACA a college programming conference I attended and had the opportunity to bring him in to judge. I loved his music and seeing how excited everyone got about him coming!

What are some upcoming events we can look forward to this semester? From my committee, Holi festival after spring break. It’s like the Color Run with no running! Toss-Back Tuesday Open Mic Night featuring different decades of songs, and an Instagram contest. Other committees include Tiger Nights, Dart Art (think scene from The Princess Diaries), and the Auburn Airwaves concert!!

Tell me more about the Holi Festival! It’s a festival celebrated in India and various other places, Denver, etc. It’s also called the festival of colors there will be color throwing with pigment, canvas decorating with hand prints and dancing/Zumba to Bollywood style music. It will be on the student center yard. It’s a celebration of spring and recognizing cultural diversity on campus and a great photo op.
