Auburn Grad Gives Cheers with Craft Beer

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Auburn chapter.

Oskar Blues Brewery, created by Alabama-native Dale Katechis, has joined forces with popular Alabama breweries, The Hangout Oyster Cook-Off, and Craft Beer Weekend to brew a collaborative beer and to shine a light on the progress of Alabama craft brewing.

In early September, Oskar Blues invited Straight to Ale (Huntsville, AL), Good People Brewing Co. (Birmingham, AL), Cahaba Brewing (Birmingham, AL), and Fairhope Brewing Company (Fairhope, AL) to its Brevard, North Carolina, brewery. There, the five breweries developed a recipe together, calling it a “collabrewation” and named the final product the Hoptub Bath Machine. It is a reference to when Katechis brewed his first beer in a bathtub while studying at Auburn University. This brew ultimately became the award-winning, best-selling Dale’s Pale Ale.

Hoptub Bath Machine is a light and crisp beer, which features a lively essence of pear and lemon, as well as a hint of green peppercorns to add a depth of flavor and an elusive spiciness. If it wasn’t already exciting enough, the beer is packaged in a Ball can and “Sweet Home” is printed on the bottom of each one. For now, Hoptub Bath Machine is available in limited quantity 6-packs in select Alabama marketplaces and along the Florida panhandle. It will make its formal debut to the public at the Hangout Oyster Cook-Off and Craft Beer Weekend, happening in Gulf Shores, Alabama, November 6-7.

Katechis has been investing in Alabama in a couple of other of ways as well. He provided an endowed fellowship program for students accepted into the Brewing Sciences and Operations program. During the upcoming Oyster Cook-Off in Gulf Shores, Katechis will be a member of a panel discussion to share his knowledge and discuss the future of craft brewing in Alabama.

The event starts with the Beer Festival. Here, visitors can sample over 60 brews from local and national breweries, including Cahaba Brewing (Montgomery, AL), Good People Brewing Co. (Birmingham, AL), Straight to Ale (Huntsville, AL), Abita (Abita Springs, LA), Lagunitas (Lagunitas, CA), Fairhope Brewing (Fairhope, AL), Goose Island (Chicago, IL), Oskar Blues (Brevard, NC) and more.
