The 7 Best Films Coming to Netflix in December

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Auburn chapter.

Christmas break is right around the corner, which means you’ll be spending a lot of time laying on the couch and watching TV… let’s be honest here, we all know it’s true. No shame, collegiettes! Thankfully, the ultimate website for binge-watching, Netflix, has come out with its list of new movies and TV shows that will be coming to the streaming service this December, and we have found 7 very exciting new additions.

A Knight’s Tale (Dec. 1)

Not only do you get to see the late Heath Ledger as an incredibly handsome bada$$ jouster but this film is awesome. It’s set in medieval times but it manages to perfectly slip in Queen music that helps to add just the right amount of humor to this incredible movie.  The plot is centered on a series of jousting matches which sounds bizarre but don’t let that deter you from one of the greatest films of all time.

Almost Famous (Dec. 1)

This is Kate Hudson’s star-making role and that should be enough to get you excited for the release of this film on Netflix.  This semi-autobiographical film perfectly captures the heart of the music geeks world- the passion for the music, the joy in the concert experience in itself, and the obsession over all of the tiniest details.  Although this movie is perfect for music fans, it is also full of wonderful characters that anyone would love.

Crossroads (Dec. 1)

If you haven’t seen this movie you need to do so ASAP.  It is the perfect guilty pleasure; a mix of music, drama, and a love story, what more could you want?  Sure this movie is mediocre at best, but who everyone needs a cheesy movie every once in a while.  Clearly Britney Spears is not the best actress but this movie is even better because of it.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (Dec. 6)

Obviously since this is a sequel it’s clearly not as good as the original, but this is the “super-sized” version so everyone is anxious to see what was not shown in theaters.  Plus, there are plenty of hilarious cameos to warrant a second watch.  Unlike other sequels, Anchorman 2 succeeds because it’s a continuation of the first film, not a repetition.  Sure some of the jokes fall short but this comedy is definitely a good Netflix addition.

The Wolf of Wall Street (Dec. 11)

If you didn’t have the time to watch this three-hour long movie last year, Christmas break is the perfect time to see what all the fuss was about.  This movie is all about loose morals and shaky ethics, which is always entertaining to watch. Get an inside look into what most people consider a true version of the lifestyles of the rich and famous with this Oscar-nominated film.

Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion (Dec. 22)

If you’ve never seen this classic from 1997 then now is the perfect time, seeing as the sequel is in the talks.  This underrated comedy has now reached cult status thanks to the endlessly quotable script.  The film centers around two friends who head back to high school for their reunion and try to prove they’ve made something of themselves even though they haven’t.  Hey, this could be some of us in a few years!  Also, Lisa Kudrow is in this and if that’s not reason enough to watch this than you should reevaluate your movie selection.

Friends (Jan. 1)

Speaking of Lisa Kudrow, Friends is coming to Netflix streaming on January 1st!  Talk about a happy new year!  Yes, this may not be a movie or released in December, but there was no way this wasn’t going to be included on this list.  So, I’ll repeat, the entire run of Friends, all 236 episodes, is coming to Netflix on New Years Day.  Could we be anymore excited?! Although reruns of the show are seemingly always on random channels and most die-hard fans already have every season on DVD, this is the first time it is available on a streaming service which will provide an easier and hassle free way to access the brilliance of Ross, Rachel, Joey, Monica, Chandler, and Phoebe.

Friends coming to Netflix means an entirely new generation will be able to enjoy the show and finally be able to understand our wonderful references that we make on the daily.  So, no matter how sad you are that there are no new episodes of Friends, be happy that all the existing ones will be on Netflix for your viewing pleasures at the beginning of next year!
