Campus Celebrity: Marissa Fullford

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at ASU chapter.

Name: Marissa Fullford

Major: Public Service and Public Policy

Expected Graduation date: May 2016

Relationship Status: You can use either of these responses: “happily seeing someone” or “chain is present, but no ball.”

What are you involved in at school?

I am Vice President of Alpha Kappa Psi- a business fraternity on campus. We pride ourselves on professional development as well as our philanthropic involvement within the community. I am also one of the Camp Carey Directors- meaning that I coordinated 9 camps of 200 freshman each in order to introduce them to the culture here at ASU and W.P. Carey. In addition to this, I was a Peer Programmer in the residential halls last year and am a Community Assistant this year. My best hall decorations so far? “Rage in the Cage with Nicolas Cage: the premier actor of our generation”. I also plan to join ABWA and am to be a part of planning the dance marathon that happens in the spring. I have also dabbled with involvement in the Womyn’s Coalition as well as the LGBTQA coalition. As a public service and policy major, I find that I am frequently adding my voice to the desperate shouts for basic human rights.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

In my spare time, I dabble in a great many things. I’ve tried it all. In my time I have tried to take up: taekwondo, cooking, drawing, playing the guitar, singing (that one went horribly wrong), filmmaking, and I even pursued a yo-yo career. None of these ever really stuck. Except, I really am a blackbelt in taekwondo. I also play volleyball intramurals- not meaning to brag or anything, but I am the sand volleyball champion both in women’s and co-ed volleyball. #kindofabigdeal

You sound busy! Do you have a job too?

Yes! I work as a proud Director of Camp Carey! Camp Carey is the camp that freshmen are encouraged to attend during August. It has been a whirlwind of excitement. I love camp and I love the fact that I get to help introduce the new students to the culture at W.P. Carey. In addition to this, I have an internship at The Vault. It’s a wine storage facility with a wine bar. I’ve learned a lot of helpful tips about entrepreneurship from the owner. I also work at the math tutoring center. If that wasn’t enough, I pride myself on being a prized house sitter (there aren’t prizes given, but if there were, I would win). I house sat just about every week over the summer and still am taking gigs into the school year. It’s a phenomenal way to make money, I get to sit, eat, watch tv, and play with animals and get paid for it! Oh and if that wasn’t enough I also am a Community Assistant over at the Hayden residential community. Aside from the community showers, it’s not a bad gig. I love my residents- whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed, they remind me of why I keep engaged on campus.

Favorite food?

Easily Thai food. I eat it about four times a week. The people at Thai Elephant actually know my personalized order by heart. Aside from that, I love hot cheetos more than any person should. Especially the extra extra hot kind.

Celebrity crush(es)?

Do I have to pick one? Ahh I think the obvious is Keira Knightley because she’s takes some pretty incredible roles and, uh hello, has an accent. I also think Matthew Goode is adorable and extremely talented. I can’t forget Lena Headey. Any woman that can terrify you and make you fall in love at the same time must be a powerful sorceress. But there are so many more! I love people that can laugh at themselves and still exude brilliance.

Describe your ideal date

My ideal date would have to be taking an adventure. I’m racking my brain for the best date I’ve been on so far and coming up blank. Any date where you can take a really neat hike and then eat somewhere you’ve never been. I always just ask the waiter what to get- they should be the expert. However, if I got to go to a really cool concert I’d be into it. I’ve been to Kings of Leon, Fleetwood Mac, Tegan and Sara, even Modest Mouse- where was I? The point is I love concerts.

Do you have any super cool talents?

I can do a pretty good duck call. I have no idea how I acquired this skill. I’ve never hunted in my life and don’t plan on it unless there is an apocalypse. Event then, I’ll probably be hunting human zombies… if there are any zombie ducks I’ll be set though.

What do you want to do when you graduate?

More than anything I would like to move to Seattle. I would like to work my way up through city government to become a City Manager. If that doesn’t pan out, I’d love to work for a publishing company. I’m very flexible- I’ll be ready and willing to roll through and see where life directs me.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

In ten years, I’ll have just turned 30. So I may be having a nervous breakdown… just kidding…. kind of. I’ll probably just be moving out of the city and into somewhere a little bit quieter. Hopefully progressing in my career and contemplating whether or not to settle down and do the whole family thing. I adore children- mostly because I’m just a really, weirdly tall kid at heart. Hopefully I’ll have hit quite a few continents by then as well.

What’s your favorite memory at ASU so far?

My favourite memory from ASU is assisting in leading the chants for W.P. Carey at Fall Welcome. I’ve never seen more school spirit than at that event. Each school gets so hyped up- it reminds you what ASU could be if everyone worked to achieve the same goal.

If you could get ice cream with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?

Hands down, Eleanor Roosevelt. She is everything. During my film phase I attempted to write a screenplay about her life. She is one of the most fascinating women in history. I only wish that I could have conversation with her about everything that she was a part of during such an intense period of history.

My name is Alejandra Guillen and I am a junior at Arizona State University's Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication and at Barrett, the Honors College. As most people do, I enjoy sleep, food (especially of the breakfast, gravy and meat varieties), and Ryan Gosling.
