A Good Read: Making It Up As I Go Along by Marian Keyes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Ashoka chapter.

Marian Keyes is an Irish author who writes non-fiction novels and is best known for her books written specifically for women. Making it Up as I Go Along is a book that features anecdotes from Keyes’ own life. A light-hearted comedy, the book is an interesting read as a guide to breaking up with your hairdresser and entering your fifties. The book features a nail varnish museum wherein the author collects nail varnishes and sings her way through insomnia. We are left feeling that we are all making it up as we go along.

Here are 5 reasons for you to read this amazing book –

1. Hilarious – The book is a hilarious account of Marian Keyes’ eventful life. She talks about how she broke up with her hairdresser because she found someone new. She even talks about her husband and how he simply loses his mind when she acts like a two-year-old.

2. Bold – The book is a bold collection of the author’s life and how she faces and solves the problems arising in the world around her. She talks about day to day struggles and tells the reader that if you look positively you can solve anything.

3. Experience – The book is about experiences. How fake eyelashes and suntans changed into an experience of a lifetime. We make our life the way it is as we go along. The paths might not make sense nor do the destination but the experience enriches us to the core of our existence.

4. Excitement – It is difficult to make people laugh, and even more difficult to make people laugh at you. Marian does a great job of making people laugh at her expense. Knowing first-hand how painful life is and can be, she exposes how painfully funny her own life is for her readers and to make us feel like our own lives are more bearable.

5. Writing Style – The book is a collection of columns and essays both old and new and is effortlessly crisp through her skillful writing. Even the table of contents elicits laughter.

This book will make you laugh and cry and as it is said, “No book can ever be an enemy to any reader.”, do give this book a try. Marian is a woman of substance which comes across in her book as well. Marian-lovers absolutely swear by this book and I can easily say it is one of my top reads.
