The Unwritten Rules of Leggings

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Remember a couple of years ago when those skintight black basics came back into style? When suddenly it became ok to not wear “real” pants to class, work, and out on the town? Yes ladies, I am talking about our most frequently worn piece of apparel: leggings.

What began as a comfortable (and warm) alternative to the campus-coined “Norts” has since turned into a fashion fad that can be worn with everything from a tunic and flats to a t-shirt and tennies. Nowadays, a pair of leggings comes with an unspoken set of rules that, if followed properly, can save you from scornful friends and a future fashion oopsie. In retrospect, we have all committed a legging crime at least once in our collegiate years so, to avoid future embarrassment, harassment, and sideways glances, I give you The Unwritten Rules of Leggings:

Rule #1: Leggings as Exercise Tights

If you prefer exercising in leggings to a traditional pair of running shorts, invest in a pair of workout tights rather than sacrificing your everyday leggings for your fitness routine. Most pairs of leggings are made from cotton and spandex, two fibers that will continuously wear after numerous washes. Long story short, these fabrics are not made for heavy perspiration and intense rubbing, which they will probably endure if you are doubling them as exercise garb on the elliptical a couple of times a week. Instead, look for a pair of tights that contains a mix of nylon and polyester to help wick sweat away from your body while you exercise. This pair from Athleta retails at $49.99 and is sure to keep you comfortable and dry in the gym.

Rule #2: The Knee Test

We all have seen and felt for that poor girl who has no idea that the entire world can see her panties, or lack thereof, under a pair of worn out leggings. Yes ladies, leggings are just like your jeans; if you wear them a million times in one season, they will start to wear out and become more and more see through. How do you determine whether or not its time to trash your favorite pair? Simply sit down in a chair with your knees bent and take a look. If you are able to see any trace of skin underneath that inky black material it’s probably time to say goodbye.

Rule #3: Leggings that Look Like Pants

No, I’m not talking about jeggings. I’m talking about a wonderful fabric that came out a couple of years ago called Ponte. Ponte is a thick and comfortable material that more and more retailers are using for their leggings. When matching leggings with a top that doesn’t quite cover your rear, look for a pair of Ponte leggings that look more like actual pants. Often times these leggings come with faux pockets or seams down the back to further the appeal. This pair from Victoria’s Secret retails at $44 and has studding that makes them a little bit edgy and appropriate for anything from a movie night with your special someone to a night out on the town with your girlfriends.

Rule #4: Cover Your Butt

I don’t care what anyone says, wearing a top that stops right at your waist with a pair of leggings is tasteless and tacky. This season is all about big chunky sweaters paired perfectly with a comfy pair of leggings and sleek riding boots. Take advantage of this trend by going a size up in your sweaters to ensure that your behind is covered. If you’re not into the oversized look, consider wearing a long cami underneath your top to make it appear less revealing or look for top with an asymmetrical hem. A top that is longer in the back and shorter in the front can make your outfit appropriate for every day situations while making you feel less like you’re swimming in a two-sizes too big sweater.

As collegiate females, we wear leggings with absolutely everything. While they may not be preparing us for our future business-casual wardrobe, they are a cute, comfortable, and stylish alternative that is appropriate for our lifestyle right now. Wearing leggings the right way will keep you on trend and collegiette cool for the rest of the winter season.
