There’s no shame in spending your Friday night binge watching HGTV’s Fixer Upper. Especially not when Chip and Joanna Gaines are total relationship goals.
The parents of four children have been married for 13 years and are currently the stars of one of HGTV’s most successful shows. Though they’re success was slow to come, Chip and Joanna made it through with their love for each other.
The Magnolia Story is the couple’s new book in which Chip details his proposal. Chip brought Joanna to a family friend’s jewelry store so they could design her engagement ring together. Because they didn’t have as much money as they do now, the ring was simple. The couple has debated upgrading Joanna’s ring to something bigger, but Joanna decided against it.
“This is the original diamond I picked, and it’s perfect just the way it is,” Joanna shared.
There’s obvious chemistry between the couple on and off camera. Chip’s quirky jokes and antics mixed with Joanna’s gentle nature works perfectly together and makes us go “awe!” at our TV screens. However, the couple denies being a match made in heaven.
“Match made in heaven is not the term you would use to describe us,” Joanna says in this week’s issue of People. “But when we mixed our personalities together, it created a spark.” This spark has made TV gold and created a widely successful business for the couple.
The money and success took some time to come. “I remember when we first got married the only money we had was what was in Chip’s pocket,” Joanna told PEOPLE. “He always had a wad of cash, but we were broke. If I needed to go grocery shopping it’s whatever was in his pocket. That’s how we paid the bills.”
You may not believe it, but the Gaines are still surprised at how successful they’ve become. “All of this sort of fell into our laps,” said Chip. “We were just living our life out here in little bitty Waco. We had dreams and aspirations like most folks, but this has really been something else.”
It’s undoubtedly a true fairy tale love story. On and off camera, the Gaines are a regular American family with so much love for one another. So much love, in fact, that they’re talking about a possible baby number five!
So what’s the secret to having a relationship like Chip and Joanna’s? “One of the secrets to our marriage, or the success of our marriage, is just really caring about one another,” Chip Gaines told ET.
