Can Katy Perry Let 2007 Britney Spears Go Already?

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

We all remember the famous breakdown of our dear Britney Spears in 2007. From spending a night in a drug rehab facility, attacking a paparazzi’s car with an umbrella, to famously shaving her head, 2007 Spears was going through a rough time. Personally, I probably relate to this type of breakdown on a weekly basis and if you don’t, lucky you. Although this is something we still remember, it’s nothing to joke about.

More recently, at the 2017 Grammy’s Katy Perry pointed out that she had taken a break from her music, because she was “taking care of her mental health.” She pointed out that this break has been, “fantastic and she hasn’t shaved her head yet,” referring to Spears. Not only has Spears sold more albums than Perry, but she’s also been in the social eye much longer.

Most people don’t really know what was going on behind the scenes of Spear’s life at the time of the breakdown. We only know what we read in magazines. She was divorcing her husband Kevin Federline, was being portrayed as a bad parent, and the Harper Bazaar released a nude photo-shoot of her. In her defense, she had A LOT going on, and maybe more that we don’t know about. Spears needed help during this time, and her antics were screaming for someone to help her. How someone reacts to what is going on in their own lives is their business, not anyone else’s.

Since 2007, Spears has made one of the best comebacks a celebrity has ever made. She was literally at the bottom of her career and personal life. With the help of her family, Spears got the help she needed and is now thriving. She’s producing new music, performs at her own sold-out show in Vegas, and posts cute pictures on Insta of her hanging out with her boys.

Following Perry’s remarks at the Grammy’s, Spears tweeted the following: “Her mouth speaks from that which fills her heart <3 Luke 6:45" which appears to be aimed at Perry. I applaud her for the way she handled it. I love being shady, but using Jesus to be shady is really good.

As a fan of Katy Perry and an advocate for mental health, I’m ashamed of her. We’re in a time of “no hate,” so why joke about someone else’s flaws? We all have problems. Instead of bashing Spears, why can’t Perry use her fame for advocating for mental health? I guess that’s none of my business.
