Binge-Worthy Netflix Shows You Might Not Know About

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Because there are only so many times you can rewatch “Greys Anatomy” and “Gossip Girl”. I know it’s hard to believe, but Netflix does have other series that are just as good. We’ve all heard about “House of Cards” and “Making a Murderer”, but there’s so many more binge-worthy shows out there.

Here’s a list of binge-worthy Netflix shows you might not know about:

Prison Break

For those “Orange is the New Black” lovers, this could be your next binge-worthy series. Recently being revamped, this drama series has had people addicted since 2005. As the title suggests, the show is about a prison break. Michael Scofield finds himself in a desperate situation after his brother, Lincoln Burrows, is convicted of a crime he didn’t commit and is put on Death Row. Michael holds up a bank to get himself incarcerated with his brother in Fox River State Penitentiary. After being incarcerated, Michael puts his plan of escaping with his brother and proving his innocence, into action. No, not all four seasons are about the brother’s escape. There’s so much more to the series. Once out, the drama does not stop. With such unique characters, endless drama, and intense situations, you’ll never be bored watching this series.

How to Get Away With Murder

If you’re a fan of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal”, you’ll love the newest addition to Shondaland. Emmy winner Viola Davis plays the brilliant and seductive law professor, Annalise Keating in this award winning drama. Annalise teaches a law class called How to Get Away with Murder. Also being an attorney, Annalise selects a group of students to assist her with cases at her firm alongside her employees, one of them being Liza Weil (aka Paris for all you “Gilmore Girls” fans.) All kinds of craziness happens in the first seasons as everyone’s dark truths are revealed. With so many twists every episode, you’ll be hooked within minutes.

House

Some of you may remember this show from your elementary and middle school years or if you’ve ever taken a medical class. This is another one for you “Grey’s Anatomy” fans. Dr. Gregory House, a cynical, narcissist doctor, tackles health mysteries along with his team at a teaching hospital in New Jersey. House takes on medical mysteries other doctors have failed to diagnose. Each episode features a new case with a new patient House and his team must race against the clock to diagnose. He is no McDreamy, but House will definitely consume your Saturday night with his brutal, yet hilarious honesty and antisocial tendencies.

Supernatural

Just look at those good-looking actors! How could you not watch this show!? Trust me, they’re just as dreamy hunting down demons and vampires. This show follows the journey of two brothers, Sam and Dean Winchester, as they spend their lives hunting monsters. After losing their mother as babies, the brothers were raised by their father as soldiers who track and kill demonic creatures. This series is all about family and the relationship-threatening secrets that come up while hunting the creatures from under the bed. In the end, these brothers try to prove that family, and friends who become family, matter above all else.

Jane the Virgin

This is a new one. Currently in its second season, “Jane the Virgin” definitely makes this list as bing-worthy material. So much happens in every episode that at the beginning of each episode you need a recap. Trust me, you’ll need that recap. The show is about Jane, a virgin (obviously,) whose planned and almost perfect life is turned upside down when she is accidently inseminated. Now pregnant, Jane must figure out what to do next as every day becomes more and more insane. Did I mention the sperm donor is her boss and high school crush, Rafael? Jane must try to balance her new life as it becomes more and more like a soap opera. With so many characters, the show is much more than Jane’s pregnancy. Just like a soap opera, SO MUCH DRAMA happens every single episode. You won’t be able to wait for the next episode.

Reign

If you like “Game of Thrones”, you’ll probably be a fan of this series. The Queen of Scotland, Mary Stuart, travels to France to lock-up her politically calculated engagement to the king’s son, Prince Francis. Even though Francis isn’t completely all for it, the two share an attraction to each other. Adding some complication, Bash, Francis’ illegitimate half-brother, has Mary finding herself drawn to him. The French Court also raises some challenges for Mary as she finds her engagement and life threatened. Through all these trials, Mary rallies, preparing herself to rule while trying to find a balance between her country and her heart.

Bob’s Burgers

A little comedy for your Friday night. “Bob’s Burgers” has a “Simpsons”-like humor. Bob Belcher runs a restaurant, Bob’s Burgers, with his wife and three kids. While business is far from booming, Bob’s wife Linda supports his dreams even though it looks like the possibility of going out of business gets higher every day. Bob tries to balance his life as a restaurant owner, chef, and father as his dysfunctional family keeps him on his toes. His daughter, Tina, is a lovesick preteen whose only wish is to have a boyfriend. The middle child, Gene, only has love for fart noises, his piano sound maker, and food. Louise, the baby, keeps everyone on edge as she schemes and plots her antics. There is so much to love about this series. It’s about family, but this show shows the real side of family and how important it is to laugh. With voices like Kristen Schaal, there’s no doubt that you’ll be laughing.

Narcos

Another new show and Netflix-original. Narcos is about, you guessed it, the Colombian drug-lord, Pablo Escobar and the DEA agents hunting him. The story is primarily told from Escobar’s point of view and DEA agent Steve Murphy. The series shows the all out war between the drug-lord and agent. The first season is about the early days of the drug-war and how Escobar got his start in the business. The series then goes through a game of cat and mouse as Escobar and Murphy go head to head. This series requires your full attention as most of it is in Spanish and requires you to read subtitles. No need to fret though, you won’t want to look away from your screen. If you’re a fan of “Breaking Bad”, or any kind of history, you’ll love this Netflix-original.

Dexter

This show takes a serial killer and makes you fall in love with him. Though Dexter isn’t your normal serial killer. Dexter Morgan is a Miami blood splatter expert who solves murders and also, well, kills the murderer. Don’t judge yet, Dexter makes sure they’re guilty before he picks up his knives. He lives by the code his father set for him as a child. Dexter only kills bad guys who are guilty of their crimes. He serves justice to the people the police can’t. Dexter puts on a front so no one knows about his secret life. He appears to be your friendly neighborhood guy. Even his policewoman sister doesn’t know his secrets. It isn’t easy though, as Dexter struggles every day trying to keep his identify a secret from his loved ones. Crime lovers will want to give this thriller series a try.

Hope you’ve found some of these binge-worthy enough for your weekend.
