Annoying Things You’ll Hear This Season as a Female Football Fan

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at App State chapter.

Maybe you’re impatiently awaiting the forever classic Auburn vs. Alabama game, or maybe you’re happily watching Cam Newton silence the haters. You might solely enjoy Appalachian football, all of which is ok. But do you know what isn’t ok? The pestering that typically comes with females enjoying the sport. Football is not exclusive to men. And it does not make us “weird” that we enjoy something that maybe not all of our friends share the same enthusiasm for. If you haven’t heard all of these lines then I would consider you quite lucky.

1. “So, your boyfriend must play football, right?”  Excuse me? Umm, no, he does not. I’m a fan all on my own, just like you are. However, he does enjoy the fact that I enjoy football just as much as he does.

2. But then if you are single you’ll hear, “you’re only watching this so you can get a man.” LOL, I can think of better ways, trust me.

3. “Which player do you think is most attractive? That must be why you’re watching, right?” Well. While I do find Tom Brady wildly attractive, I’m pretty sure me watching a game his team isn’t playing in has nothing to do with that.

4. “Who was the back-up quarterback in 1927? If you’re a true fan you would know this?”  What? Do you know that? Does ANYONE know that? I don’t even remember what I wore two days ago.

5. “Your opinion isn’t relevant, you’ve never played football.” And neither have you. Fantasy football isn’t the same thing as actually playing; hate to break it to ya.

6. “But, aren’t you here to…. like….bring us food and stuff? You’re actually going to watch?” Do you really think I would go somewhere just to make sure you are well-fed? I’m not your mother.

7. “You only watched the Super Bowl because Beyoncé performed during halftime.” OK. Beyoncé was just a great, extra incentive to watch. I would’ve watched anyway. But if you didn’t enjoy Beyoncé’s performance then you are wrong.

8. “You should watch sports that women participate in, like basketball. You know, the WNBA? Or maybe tennis.” Yeah, sure, because those are televised just as frequently as the NFL is.

9. “You can’t join our fantasy league, that’s like bringing a chick to guy’s night.”  That’s cool. But please don’t ever ask me again for anything.

But you know what ladies, all is well. We shall carry on dominating in our own fantasy leagues, whether other people like it or not. And yes, we do know what a pick-6 is, thanks for asking.
