Everyone’s been there. High heel caught in an air vent, mascara running down your face when you’re crying, or a wardrobe malfunction during the Superbowl halftime show…Ok maybe not, but as girls we are constantly trying to look our best and avoid ruining our shoes or getting laughed at by the cute guy in Psych class. Here are a few tricks to avoid these dreaded mishaps.
Disaster 1: The See-Through Top
On sunny spring days this becomes a more frequent problem. The terrible dorm lighting can be misleading and sometimes the shirt is not as thick as you orignially thought.
Tip: Stand by a window so you can see yourself in natural light, or better yet ask your roommate before you head out.
When in doubt wear a matching bra or layer a tank top underneath to provide more coverage.
Disaster 2: The Mid-day Frizz
You leave your dorm thinking you’re actually having a good hair day and by the time your hair dries or the humidity hits you look like a hot mess.
Tip: Keep some leave in conditioner in your bag and run your fingers through it. Some people swear that rubbing dryer sheets over your hair work even better!
Disaster 3: The Marilyn Moment
A gust of wind and flowy dresses don’t mix.
Tip: Ok, this one is pretty obvious, but a pair of Soffe shorts is always a good addition on windy days. Plus you never know when you might need to do a cartwheel.
Disaster 4: The “Anything but Clothes” Party Situation
So this may only happen a few times a year, but it’s still one of the worst opportunities for a wardrobe malfunction. Girls, get it together. If you’re going to wear caution tape as a dress you need to be prepared for the consequences of dancing it off by the end of the night.
Tip: Wear boy shorts, strapless bras, bathing suits, pasties, what have you. Whatever you need to do to cover your bits… Or just wear a lot of duct tape.
Disaster 5: Caught In The Rain
The crazy weather at App makes this one a biggie. If you don’t check the weather, your whole look, day, and homework can be ruined quicker than the Raley parking lot floods.
Tip: Prevention is key. Keep a weather app on your phone and dress accordingly. This is the perfect day for a hat or hoodie. Also, keep two trash bags in the front of your backpack for days when it unexpectedly rains. They can be used to cover yourself or your bag if your laptop is in danger or you’re wearing a fabric like suede or leather.
College can present an array of opportunities for a wardrobe malfunction, but always be prepared so you never end up being “that girl.”
