Why You Should Join HC Amherst Today!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.

Happy 2016, beautiful people of Amherst! What was your New Year Resolution? Maybe you hope to achieve straight-As, to become a TA for your favorite course or to join a new club.  If you’re resolution is the latter, then you are in the right place.  If you’re thinking, “Hmm, I don’t think I can join another club right now,” this article may still be for you.

Everyone Can Submit

Don’t be deterred by the HER in Her Campus.  In 2009, the online magazine was created for collegiate women by collegiate women.  Now,  Her Campus writes articles for people of all genders, educational backgrounds and around the world.  Now, Her Campus has sections for content that include LGBTQ+, high school students and graduate students.  As of today, at least 90% of HC Amherst contributors identify as females currently attending Amherst college. We would love for alumni and current students of all genders to start contributing to show a more well-rounded voice of Amherst.

Writing in a Non-Academic Setting

I remember the first time one of the leaders of HC Amherst, Caroline, explained why she joined Her Campus.  She said that she wanted to write in a non-academic setting.   What makes Her Campus unique is that each person who writes for Her Campus writes for a different reason.  We have food bloggers, travel bloggers, fashion bloggers, news writers, interviewers and writers that can fall in every category. If you love to write, Her Campus is the perfect opportunity to find the style of writing you enjoy the most with the pressure to do it.

Having A By-Line

If you are interested in writing or editing, you may already know the term “by-line.” This is the part of any written piece that credits the author of the work.  If you are interested in writing, editing, law school, business school, graduate school, or any profession that wants proof that  you can write a clear, concise paper, having a portfolio with your writing is a great way to showcase that.  All writers at Her Campus, unless they choose to be anonymous, have a by-line which links to a list of all of their written works.  Students can link this page on their website, LinkedIn or put it on their resume to show employees, “Hey, I can write too!”

Photography Portfolio

Maybe your talents lie behind a camera lens rather than with a pen in your hand.  With our weekly snapshot section, we need photographers to display the different sides of Amherst.  This includes scenic shots from Memorial Hill to portraits of Amherst students in Frost Library.  We want snapshots to capture the essence of Amherst College, not just for current members of the Amherst community but also for prospective students and others interested in learning more about us.

You Don’t Just Have To Write

What?  Yes, you read that correctly.  We have many students who want to get involved with Her Campus but don’t feel comfortable writing.  Here are a few positions that don’t require writing an article:

  • Photographers

  • Campus Profiles Interviewers  (formerly Campus Celeb and Campus Cutie)

  • Social Media Managers (Facebook, Twitter & Instagram)

  • Marketing and Publicity Managers (Posters, Table Tents)

  • Senior Section Editors

On January 30th, the co-editors of Her Campus Amherst will attend the Spring Involvement Fair in the Alumni Gym.  As usual we will have candy, a sign-up sheet and great conversation.  Please stop by if this article even made you a little bit interested in joining Her Campus.
