Spring Fashion Preview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.

No but really I swear tomorrow is March. Because of this, I think I am going to part ways with some of my boots and start attempting to wear flats again. Though my feet may turn into ice cubes while walking between classes I feel that it is my duty as a budding fashionista to push the limits a bit.

Let’s talk about ways to explore new trends this spring! This season there are a lot of old trends making their way back to runways and photo shoots, but with a slight twist. For example, the tribal trend of a few seasons ago has become a bit more exotic and is now looking ‘tropical’. This trend is slightly different because of the color palate. Tropical inspired looks are full of bright patterns. I’m loving the look of a patterned top with cropped and tailored printed paints. Stick with one color family and you’ve got it made. The tropical trend extends to accessories as well- don’t worry guys the statement necklace is still a thing. So, here’s how to re-vamp that trend: instead of big jewels or pearls, pick one with a geometric shape and bright colors. A lot of statement necklaces out this season look like bangles in that they’re simply circular but with bright colors and metallics.

One trend sticking around from winter is white. The difference here is white for spring can be on the edge of sheer for some pieces. Spring clothing does not have to be as structured as winter white looks. Spring is about light and contrasting the harsh and cold months. Also I think it is totally fine to wear white on white. When wearing a full outfit of one color, it is a good idea to add some texture, wheather that is with lace, or even pleats. I’m going to be aiming for a baddass version of Sarah Jessica Parker when she gets married at the courthouse in the Sex and the City movie. Gold accessories including shoes pair nicely with white. They also look good with the aforementioned tropical trends, so you can kill two birds with one stone with that one. But don’t do that while wearing your white outfit because it will get dirty.

I know that Meryl Streep is ready to dispose of the guy who suggests florals for Runway’s spring spread in Devil Wears Prada, but they are actually kind of a thing each season. Floral prints this spring are a bit more subdued then they have been in the past. This is nice because you can be trendy without shoving it in everyone else’s face. This season, the floral trend coincides with a lot of paler tones that were shown on the spring runways. To pull of the floral look try to pair it with something a bit more out of the ordinary. This season, plastic jewelry is on trend. These two looks will give your outfit a nice contrast. Wearing a floral top, jacket, or pants with a solid piece will keep your look succinct. Additionally, this season metallic eye shadows are in-style, and luckily a light gold dusting on your lids would look divine with a flower inspired look.

Lastly, after a cold Amherst winter, it is time to give our hair some love. I have definitely committed some major hair crimes including walking outside with wet hair, literally letting it freeze. The cold weather and wind dries out our hair so easily and it is important to help your locks in their recovery process. This can start with using a leave-in conditioning treatment like argon oil each time you wash your hair. Also, people say that washing your hair every day is bad for your hair, which I guess like is true but if you play a sport of just think that is gross, your hair is probably going to dry out easier. This is fine, just take extra good care of it! Also, when blowing drying or straightening, try to leave the styling tool at a low heat. While it may be quicker to turn up the heat all the way, it can be very damaging to your hair. If you have a free Sunday, try a deep conditioning treatment that will replenish your hair for spring and allow it to shine in the hopefully warm sun! Enjoy spring ladies, and make it last! Try new looks, and be fearless! Now, bring in the dancing lobsters.
