Color, and Texture, and Class, Oh My!

By Mercedes MacAlpine

Button Down Shirts: (I promise, they’re not all that bad, give them a chance!) While generally button-downs are reserved for swanky occasions (Gatsby TAP, anyone?) they can also be worn on the daily. I was never really a fan of polo shirts (I used to have a uniform for school...all 13 years) and  after a little experimentation I decided oxfords were the way to go. READ MORE

19 Pieces of Advice for 20 Somethings

By Kristen Lee
October 28, 2012 - 1:19pm

1. Be kind to your mother. 2. Travel as much as possible. 3. If you’re a woman, carry pepper spray with you. 4. Understand that family is just a title for a group of people you share genes with – if something goes wrong, it’s not the end of the world. 5. Be conscious of what you eat in terms of taste and quality, but if you agonize over how many calories something is or how fat you’re going to get, your brain will explode and you will not be able to enjoy anything. 6. If you’re going to be stingy, know what you’re saving for. 7. Wear color. 8. Try as much ethnic food as possible. READ MORE

A Weekend Abroad in Copenhagen

By Evelyn Kramer
October 24, 2012 - 7:03pm

I’m in love with another city. Copenhagen. She’s clean, efficient, beautiful, friendly, small but not too small; everything you could ask for in a city. The minute I stepped on the metro at the airport, I knew it was love. There are only two metro lines in Copenhagen, so it’s pretty impossible to get lost. The trains are immaculately clean, and they run without drivers, which means that they run every few minutes 24/7, even late at night. READ MORE

In Support of Angie

By Evelyn Kramer
October 19, 2012 - 5:06am

A lot of us were disappointed in our school on Wednesday night. The story of Angie Epiphano leaves us with the idea that saving face is more important to our college than the well being of a student. We have seen Amherst as a utopia; a bubble of safety inhabited by the intellectually elite. Angie’s story shattered that image. READ MORE

Sub Free Diaries: Milkshake

By Vivian Mac
October 14, 2012 - 5:26pm

I spent the rest of the week feeling pretty homesick after coming back from the short fall break. Enjoying my food, bed and toilet at home definitely beat writing papers and studying for exams. But no matter where I am, I can always look forward to Fridays. READ MORE

Weekend Abroad at Oktoberfest

By Evelyn Kramer
October 13, 2012 - 6:10am

In order to get into a tent on a Saturday at Oktoberfest, you have to be there EARLY. And so I found myself in line at the Hofbrau house at 6:30AM along with lots of other groggy but enthusiastic kids in their twenties. Entering Oktoberfest was like walking into a fairytale, or the Disneyland of beer. Rollercoasters, towering swings, and fun slides were interspersed with massive beer tents and little stalls selling every kind of tasty, unhealthy, wonderfully pungent German delicacy. Just before nine, the mad scramble to get into the tent began. READ MORE

Semester Abroad: Weekend Along the Wine Route

By Evelyn Kramer
October 1, 2012 - 4:18pm

Last weekend, we took a three-hour train ride from Paris to Strasbourg, a little city on the border of France and Germany. After disposing of our baggage at the little chain motel, we headed toward Petit France, the medieval quarter that is the heart of Strasbourg. All great cities have a corresponding great river. In New York, it’s the Hudson and East rivers, from which you can see the imposing skyline. In Paris it’s the Seine, flanked by breathtaking monuments and traversed by numerous romantic bridges that lovers can put locks on as a testament to their undying love. READ MORE

My Sub Free Friday: "It's Been Four Weeks" 9/21/2912

By Vivian Mac
September 29, 2012 - 9:09pm

It’s been four weeks since I officially set foot in Amherst College as a freshman and I have not yet consumed any alcohol here. (The coffee liqueur in the tiramisu and the coq au vin at Val don’t count.) Drinking alcohol is a large part of the social culture in college, which I understand why, but I have not felt like I was missing out on anything special from the accounts I’ve heard from other people. I will, however, be honest and let you know when I do have an unprecedented thirst for beer pong, hard liquor or whatever it may be.

Up All Night: My Sub-Free Friday 9/14/2012

By Vivian Mac
September 21, 2012 - 7:32am

“How much are we going to drink?” I asked my roommate Seewai while looking at the bag of Starbucks Dark Espresso Roast. We were at CVS after going to LimeRed for that buy one get one free bubble tea offer. After eying the Starbucks Doubleshot Energy + Coffee on the snack aisle, we came up with the idea to brew our own espresso shots to drink that evening. READ MORE

Settling into Paris

By Evelyn Kramer
September 20, 2012 - 3:00pm

After two weeks in Tours, we finally left for Paris. I was initially disappointed to learn that my host family lives a little outside Paris, in a place called Neuilly. It turns out that Neuilly is like the Brooklyn Heights of Manhattan (and I happen to be from Brooklyn Heights, in case you didn’t know). It is essentially an extension of Paris, only five minutes from the Champs-Élysées by metro, but it’s slightly calmer and more residential. READ MORE
