How to Keep Your Wardrobe Light and Simple this Summer!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.

Yes, it’s true, finals are over! Whether you are spending the summer in a city working, on a beach hanging, or a little bit of everything, my most important rule for summer fashion is; less is more! I don’t know about you guys, but where I call home is brutally hot and humid in the summer, and no one wants to or should be bogged down by too much clothing, or too much styling. These two offences are equally as problematic.

Too much clothing is obviously an issue because it is too heavy in a literal sense, and also a fashion one. While working, it is obvious that you have to look appropriate for you job, but you also don’t want to be incredibly uncomfortable throughout the day, especially if you have to be outside running an errand or two. Summer is all about loose and flowy shapes, so your work wardrobe can have the same beachy appeal.

Another issue with summer clothing is wearing too many trends at once. If you choose to wear accessories with your look, try and pick one or two per outfit. For example, if you want to wear a fedora, keep your shoes and jewelry minimal because a hat is a statement piece. If you are wearing a few simple items, it is ok to wear more than two, as long as they don’t begin to take away from your outfit. Any more than two or three will just begin to feel cumbersome and not make your look seem ready for summer. When it is colder, it is easier to get away with draping and such, but now is not the time to practice looking like you’ve stepped out of a catalog. That said, you can still look great by keeping it simple and light.

The beach is the same as the streets, maybe even more so. On the actual beach, or in a beach town, remember the relaxed vibe. Keeping your look simple and cool will go a long way. Less is more, and the less clothing you are wearing, the easier it is to change into your swimsuit! In order to do this, I say dresses all the way. Regardless of shape or size, dresses are really a trendy girl’s most important wardrobe piece. They can easily go from day to night, so if you are going to stock up on one thing this summer, I would say go for dresses! Ladies, take these tips and have an amazing summer! Until the fall, collegiettes!
