Fall Fashion Preview

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.

Hello ladies and welcome back to another semester here at Amherst. I cannot believe it is already the fall of my senior year! Knowing that it is my last Amherst fall, I am eager to take this opportunity to try out some fresh new trends and explore all that fall fashion has to offer. New York Fashion Week just wrapped up, and it looks like this spring the styles will be fairly similar to what we are seeing currently.

Let’s talk about fall fashion and ways to incorporate summer clothes into weather-appropriate looks. Firstly, nautical looks have made their way back to the forefront. The nautical look is a great way to incorporate summer clothes and transition to fall. Any striped shirts from the summer can be easily converted to fall under a jean jacket or with high-wasted dark jeans and booties (if you are searching a new pair, check out Tod’s oxford-inspired booties with a chunky heel). A way to change up the nautical theme is to add a pop of red to your outfit. You can do this by adding a red lip, or a red bangle, or shoe.

As you may remember from spring, bohemian and 70s-inspired outfits were all the rage. Well, it seems as that look is here to stay. Not only are many fashion spreads dominated by bohemian ensembles, but the Spring/Summer collections from Fashion Week debuted even more 70s-inspired looks. So, here are a few ways to use this trend in the fall. Feaux-fur is everywhere! Vests, long coats, fur lined boots and clogs all feature fur. Weather it is long hair or a more shearling style, fur is definitely in style. I think vests are a fun and easy way to approach the bohemian trend. They are also functional in the chilly New England weather. Pair it with a loose fitting blouse and wide leg jeans and you’ll have it made. Fur vests also pair well with sweater dresses and can help you balance out a knee-high boots, which have also made a comeback, see Stuart Weitzman’s newest version.

Lastly, a lot of the fall collections feature pale color palates. Pale pink is a great way to give a tougher outfit a feminine twist. If you, like me, love to dress in all black, get out of your comfort zone with a blush toned blazer or over coat. A light pink blouse or loose fitting shirt under a rough leather jacket is a good way to give your look some dimension. You can tuck the blouse into a tighter pant to accentuate your waistline. Fall is all about the mash-up between masculine and feminine. I’m not sure there is anything more feminine than pink, so use it! A loose fitting, boy-ish pink sweater is another way to incorperate this color into your look (see article heading photo).

As for beauty this season, soft cheeks and eyes are all the rage. Keeping everything else simple allows you to try out a punchy red or pink lip, which is also very on trend (Check out the DKNY runway and editorials for some inspiration on that front). To make your lip stand out even more, go for an on trend sleek pony. Keeping the hair off your face will highlight your make up. A lot of the runways featured sleek middle parts as well. If you are looking for something a bit more exciting, experiment with hair accessories or loose waves, both of which are also popular at the moment.

Whatever trends you try this fall gals, remember to stay true to yourself and always dress for yourself! Until next time!
