Dabbing with Dorit: 13 Songs For Your Weekend

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.

Here are 13 songs for you to enjoy this weekend, whether it’s to procrastinate or to play while you get ready for a night out! Hope y’all like them and that at least one of these songs is able to get you up and dancing!

1.“Work the Middle” – Alex Aiono

I first heard Alex Aiono doing covers on YouTube, but he has since produced his own music! This song has a really cool vibe and always gets me wanting to dance with friends and have a good time.

2.“Cooking Thoughts of You” – Stamos

I’m gonna be real honest with y’all – this is probably one of my favorite songs of all time. The poor people on my floor have probably heard me play this about 39048538 times, but I really can’t get enough of it. It’s a song that puts me in such a good mood and makes me get up and dance like a weirdo, which is always super embarrassing but who doesn’t like to be embarrassed! Stamos makes great use of the cooking metaphor for love throughout the song which I definitely appreciate. I really can’t emphasize enough how much I love this song. If you only listen to one song on this playlist, make it this one!!!

3.“8TEEN” – Khalid

Still being that ripe young age of “8TEEN”, I feel a particular connection to this song. It’s a pretty chill song, but it’s also something you can groove to and have fun with. Khalid is definitely and up and coming artist so keep an eye for new good music from this guy!

4.“While We Have the Time” – PLVTINUM, Sam Carter

I am also kind of obsessed with this artist who goes by PLVTINUM (get it?). He has a really unique voice and this song has a bit of tropical vibe which I really dig. He sings lots about young and modern love which is definitely relatable for millennials. It’s a flirty song that I always have lots of fun listening to.

5.“BODY” – Eric Nam & Timbaland

Love me some Asian representation in music! This is a super fun and catchy song that I makes me wanna just dance around with my girlfriends.

6.“Bow Down” – Louis Mattrs

This is a very relaxed song with a catchy chorus. It’s a little alternative but also has those elements that make it just a chill pop song. And who doesn’t like a song about a guy who knows when to #bowdown?

7.“Fire in Me” – Rahn Harper, Sevnth, Mitchell Cohen

This song doesn’t make you wanna go wild necessarily but it will still get you moving! It’s a relatively unknown song, but I hope you guys like it!

8.“American Girls” – ONE OK ROCK

Haven’t listened to much rock these days but this song brings me back to my preteen days angsty days with a little less angst. It’s a real headbanger and also a get-up-and-mover.

9.“LIving Out Loud” – Brooke Candy, Sia

Love love love Sia! I kind of take as this as #girlpower song with a pretty empowering message. I just want to belt it out with my fellow #nastywomen.

10.“Gold” – Dash Berlin

I really like the beginning of this song. It’s got some flirty lyrics and watch out for that beat drop!

11.“Take You Home” – Dylan Matthew

When the bass comes into this song, you can’t help but wanting to get up groove even though it is a bit slow. It’s a song about being young and making the most of fleeting moments, which is how I read it, but you can probably guess from title people make the most of those fleeting moments in different ways! To each their own, no judgment here.

12.“I Can’t Fall in Love Without You” – Zara Larsson

Had to include some slow ballad that’s been getting me in the feels lately. The piano in this song is absolutely beautiful and has such a tragic yet soulful sound. It’s also pretty cool to hear Zara Larsson singing something slower that elicits some more somber feelings but also highlights her beautiful voice and ability to sing any kind of song.

13.Workin” – James the Mormon, David Archuleta

What 90s kid didn’t jam out to “Crush” by our favorite American Idol runner-up? When I heard this song, I was so surprised to hear David on something from this decade, but it was definitely a pleasant surprise, bringing me back to days of belting out “DO YOU CATCH YOUR BREATH WHEN I LOOK AT YOU” in my room as a wee pre-teen. It’s a super fun song to bop around to and kind of gets me in the mood to get work done!

Dorit is a sophomore on the swim team at Amherst College from Maryland . Although she is currently undecided, she is a prospective LJST, Computer Science, or Environmental Studies major, or some combination of those three! During her free time Dorit enjoys hanging out with friends and getting a good laugh, doing DIY projects, reading Sophie Kinsella, and spending time outdoors, especially by the water. She has a guinea pig named Potato who is often also her muse.
Bonnie is a sophomore at Amherst College. Even though she studies statistics, she is interested in technology, pediatric medicine, dentistry, education, and public health.  She spends most of her day trying out new things, like eating an ice cream cone while biking or looking for ways to climb onto campus building roofs. "All over the place" would be the best way to describe her.
