Campus Celebrity Darienne Madlala’16

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Amherst chapter.

Darienne Madlala ’16, affectionately known as Dac, probably doesn’t need an introduction. Most Amherst students know her as being kind and full of life. It’s no wonder that she is this week’s Campus Celebrity!

Tell me about where are you from:
I’m from Durban, South Africa’s playground. Best city in South Africa. I may even go so far as to say the world.

How does the weather at Amherst compare to the weather back home?:
Haha, is that even a real question? Weather is mild in Durban and not so bad as in the interior because we have the ocean. People say Durban weather is like California’s; but I’d say California’s weather is like Durban’s

Why did you choose to attend Amherst?:
I live in Maryland now but I didn’t want to go to schools in that area because I wanted to be closer to where my grandmother is (she lives in Rhode Island). Then I met Liberty when I came to visit Amherst and it was great because I’d have at least one friend when I arrived

What are you interested in both academically and leisurely?:
I love history, art history and anatomy – those are the types of books I like to read academically and leisurely. Also on that list is photography, dancing, drinking coffee and/or tea. Travel is one too! By travel I don’t mean always using “#wanderlust” and doing the most but simply getting out of your comfort zone and experiencing different places – it could even be down the road.

What are you passionate about the most?:
Over the last few months I’ve been passionate about community systems strengthening to provide better healthcare access and what I can do to follow this passion after college. I’m also passionate about my family and the continued success of ACSU.

What are your plans for the rest of your time at Amherst and beyond:
My plan right now is to graduate (with a husband degree) and beyond Amherst I hope to be doing something that aligns with my passions

If you could make one change to the world, playful or serious, what would it be?:
I would make all leaders become people who lead with pure intentions to see their nations grow and attempt to do so wholeheartedly. This would solve SO many problems

What’s something you’ve always wanted to say but never got the chance to say it?:
Uhm there’s nothing I can think of tbh
