Santa Claus

By Evelyn Kramer
December 15, 2012 - 7:59pm

In order to help you get into the Christmas spirit, this week’s Campus Celebrity is none other than Santa Claus!  Back in the day, Saint Nicholas was a 4th century saint and Greek bishop.  He had a reputation for leaving coins in the shoes of people who left them out for him.  The Dutch took this tradition up, but morphed Saint Nicholas into Sinterklaas, which, obviously, is how we ended up with the name and iconic figure Saint Claus.  On Saint Nicholas’ Eve (December 5th), Dutch children put their shoes in front of the chimneys, and leave hay and carrots for Sinterklaas’s horse.  The next morning, the children who have been good find candy, marbles, and small toys in their shoes.   READ MORE

Sub Free Diaries: Art

By Vivian Mac
December 11, 2012 - 4:23pm

After decorating my window with Christmas lights, I went to the Mead Art Museum to look at a paintings. Despite having lived next to the museum for almost one whole semester, it was only my second visit. I briefly browsed  parts of the museum and I found a cozy place with brown couches, religious art and an unlit fireplace. I believe it’s called the Rotherwas Room. I might have found another great study spot. I headed back to the painting I was there for, McEntee’s Sea from Shore. I spent awhile just sitting or standing in front of it, looking at it from up close, from afar, and from angle to angle. It was quite an unique experience. I was tempted to lie down on the plushy seat in front of the painting, but that’s probably not museum-approved.    ...

Dining Out in Paris: Duck, Followed by Duck

By Evelyn Kramer
December 10, 2012 - 4:03pm
