The Return of Captain Jack Sparrow

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Disney announced the production beginnings of the fifth installment of The Pirates of The Caribbean movie series on February 17th. The fifth pirates movie, titled Pirates of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, is named after a line one of the animatronic pirates says on the Disney World ride. This ride also inspired the original Pirates of the Caribbean movie, Curse of The Black Pearl.

The movie is currently being filmed in Australia, and has an anticipated release date of July 7, 2017. The movie has already been pushed forward two years of its original release date, which was 2015, due to complications prior to production.

According to Disney’s press release, the movie sets Captain Jack Sparrow fighting for his life and freedom once again. Captain Jack Sparrow is faced with deadly ghost pirates, who are led by new antagonist Captain Salazar. Captain Salazar has escaped from the Devil’s Triangle, and is out to kill every pirate who sails the seas. Additional rumors claim that Captain Jack Sparrow is responsible for the murder of Captain Salazar’s brother, which may lead to why Captain Salazar has targeted Captain Jack Sparrow specifically in his pirate hunt. In order to save his own life, Captain Jack Sparrow sets out on a hunt for Poseidon’s Trident, which allows whoever keeps it to rule the seas.

The new Pirate’s film has a cast of new actors in addition to some rumored returning cast members. It is confirmed that Johnny Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow, because realistically the movie series couldn’t happen without his participation. Orlando Bloom, who plays Will Turner in the first three films, is rumored to be returning. There is no definite conformation of this to date, but it would be great for the die-hard Pirates fan to see Will return to the screen. Geoffrey Rush is rumored to be returning as Captain Barbosa again in addition to Kevin R McNally as Gibbs. New actors to the crew include Kaya Scodelario (Maze Runner), Brenton Thwaites (The Giver), and Javier Barden (Skyfall) as Captain Salazar.

Though the new cast doesn’t seem to compete with the fourth movie, Pirates of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, addition of Penelope Cruz, there is some potential. It is as always a disappointment that Keira Knightley will not be joining the cast for a returning role as Elizabeth Swan. Though, it may be interesting to see if Orlando Bloom, as Will Turn, will return without his bride. It will also be questionable how well the fifth movie will actually do, being that the fourth movie made approximately $180,000,000 gross income less than the sequal, which was the highest gross income movie of the series.

Though the director is new, the writers are all the same, so there may be some hope left in this new film. Let’s just hope Johnny Depp pulls the movie together as always and delivers his classic lines with his triangle hat, bottle of rum and broken compass at his side.
