How to Judge a Guy by His Shoes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

When you meet a new guy, the first thing you generally look at is there face, their eyes, and probably their smile. After you exchange a few words and break eye contact, you give them a fast body scan. Are they well dressed? Slobby? Somewhere in between? Then your eyes go for his shoes. Is he wearing running sneakers, loafers, or UGG slippers? The thing about guy’s shoes is that they say a lot about their personal style. A guy’s shoes can tell you if he takes pride in the little things, because guys don’t have many other accessories to shop for. Some guys treat their shoes like a girl would treat her favorite purse; no scuffs in sight and they’re always crisp and clean. A guy who keeps his shoes super clean means that he most likely will take good care of you because he takes care of his own possessions and home. A guy with messy, old shoes may not always put you first if he doesn’t keep up with his own needs (i.e. a new pair of shoes every so often). Is there a correlation between guy’s shoes and their personality? This isn’t a foolproof method of finding your ideal guy, but take a look at their shoes and see if these descriptions below help you understand him more.

1. Expensive running sneakers: This means that fitness if a priority and he may have some extra spending money (because of a job) lying around to spend on you. He is definitely an athlete and a good training buddy. He might be a little competitive with you, but what guy isn’t?

2. Boat shoes: This guy either came right off the boat from Martha’s Vineyard or he’s simply following the preppy trend happening right now. He probably got them from his mom for Easter and then kept wearing them because a girl said he looked sharp. This type of shoe says that he wants to look presentable to the opposite sex (or not opposite) and cares about looking good for you but isn’t going to pull out a Chuck Bass three piece suit in the middle of the day.

3. Lace-up oxfords: This guy is dressing up for a presentation for a class or an interview for an internship. Definitely a keeper. He’s focused on a goal and wants to look good in the process of achieving it. If this is his every day shoe though, he’s the serious type and is dedicated to impressing you. He might be insecure at first.

4. Slip-on loafers: European. This is more of a fancy guy. He could take you out to dinner and bring you roses. Or he could be your new GBFF (gay best friend). And we’re moving on…

5. Converse All-Stars: This guy sticks with the classics. He is the sweet, scruffy alternative type, and very interested in music. He’s old fashion and will treat you like his mom taught him to treat a girl. An ideal first date would be to a coffee shop and you could talk about The Rolling Stones.

6. Construction boots: Those big Timberland boots we don’t understand why so many guys wear? Yeah, proceed with caution. He could just be a normal guy riding the trend or he could be rough around the edges. Either way, he’s expressing a certain style that says he’s tough and manly. It’s your job to break through that tough exterior!

7. UGG slippers: This one is an exception. There isn’t a stereotypical UGG-wearer. Guys who wear UGGs publicly have a load of confidence. They’ve caught on to us girls that these are the comfiest shoes ever and want a part of it. It means he isn’t afraid to be comfortable in public and probably is down to cuddle.
