Diego Mariscal ’15: Changing How the World Views Disability

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Junior Diego Mariscal is a student here at American University and began his own nonprofit organization named 2Gether International. Diego’s organization focuses on educating young people about the importance of disability awareness throughout the world and how disability affects everyday lives. His accomplishments have also made him internationally recognized. When we talked to Diego, he had a lot to say about his organization and all that it has become.

Her Campus AU: “So, we hear you created 2Gether International. Can you tell us a little bit about that?”

Diego Mariscal: “The organization is supposed to educate people about the importance of disabilities. Typically, you learn about African Americans or even Latinos and immigration issues. But rarely do you learn about what it means to have a disability. People with disabilities are the number one minority in the world. Disability is the only minority group that you can become a part of. So disability should become something that everyone should care about. 2Gether focuses on the importance of educating about disability.”

Diego started this organization in high school. He decided to make a group with his high school that soon became a large success worldwide. 2Gether International has won multiple awards including “Architect of the Future” in Vienna Austria, “Global Change Maker” in London, England and the Terry Fox Award.

Diego is an inspiration to students all over the world, while trying to make the world a better place for people with disabilities.
