Carolyn Turkaly ’18: Resident Green Eagle

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Her Campus American: Tell me a little about yourself.CT: I am freshman studying Political Science. I am in the AU Honors Program and the School of Public Affairs Leadership Program. I am from Hudson, Ohio.

HCAU: What made you decide to go to AU?CT: I wanted to come to AU because of its great location in a city I love as well as its commitment to public service.

HCAU: Can you tell us a little bit about the Green Eagles and your role within the program?CT: The Green Eagles is a sustainability peer education program run through the Office of Sustinability. As a green eagle, I help the office conduct research, educate the student body on sustainable living, and plan events.

HCAU: What made you decide to get involved with the Green Eagles?CT: I applied to be a Green Eagle because I wanted to join a team of dedicated, passionate people who have made AU one of the most sustainable schools in the nation.

HCAU: Why is sustainability such an important topic within AU?CT: Sustainability should be a concern for all AU students. AU has a student body that is very passionate about social justice, and marginalized communities are the most affected by issues such as climate change and pollution. While these issues are global, change can begin on this campus. By living sustainably, students are contributing to a greener and more just future.

HCAU: Are there any upcoming events involving the office of sustainability we should know about? CT: Students should look forward to the EcOlympics in March. Residence halls will compete to reduce energy usage and waste. Additionally, April is Earth Month, and the Green Eagles are planning exciting events to celebrate!

HCAU: What other organizations are you involved in on campus?CT: I am the Blog Editor for AU College Democrats and am on the e board for Students Against Sexual Violence. I am also am the Chair of sustainability for RHA.
