Breast Cancer Awareness Month in DC

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Have you been noticing a lot more pink around campus? October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. A month dedicated to promoting breast cancer awareness, fundraising for research into causes, treatments and cures, as well as discussing prevention and diagnosis of breast cancer. The White House kicked things off this month sporting a lovely pink hue in honor and support of breast cancer awareness. If you’re looking to show your support, here are a few events and promotions that support breast cancer awareness and research in the District!

October 11-13: Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure

            When: October 11th, 12th & 13th

Where: Throughout the D.C. area beginning in Wheaton, MD and finishing at the Washington Monument (Shutdown permitting!)

The 3-Day is an event that lets participants walk 60 miles in order to fundraise for breast cancer research, education, and community health programs. Participants must raise a minimum of $2,300 for the cause! There are numerous cheering stations throughout the city, so stop by with a group of friends to encourage and support these amazing women walking to cure breast cancer!

October 19: The Washington Capitals will host their annual Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night against the Columbus Blue Jackets.

            When: October 19th

In the past, the Caps have shown support by holding a practice jersey silent auction. Fans can bid on practice jerseys worn by players. Limited edition Hockey Fights Cancer jerseys are adorned with pink names and numbers, a pink ribbon, and are signed by their respective players. The proceeds will benefit the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Season ticket holders who have battled cancer will also be honored during an on-ice ceremony before the game.

October 19: The George Washington University Hospital will hold their free cancer screening event.

            When: October 19th from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Where: Medical Faculty Associates Courtyard at 22nd and I St., NW.

They are providing free screenings for several cancers, including mammograms and additional information about breast cancer detection.
