AU Celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

American University athletics proudly celebrated its fifth National Girls and Women in Sports Day on January 26, 2013, during the AU Women’s Basketball game. AU took on Army at home in Bender Arena for the annual game on this holiday. The AU female athletes volunteered their time on Saturday to help with the organization of the game and run a sports clinic for the little girls who came to watch. Members of the female soccer team, field hockey team, swimming and diving team, cross country team, lacrosse team, volleyball team, basketball team, and the spirit and dance squad were in attendance. After AU’s close victory against Army, athletes of all teams signed autographs and the clinic began. The clinic ran for about an hour, while groups of girls switched between the stations and learned techniques about each sport. For example, the swim team’s station tied bungee cords around the girls and they ran across the gym to feel the resistance as if they were using the cords in the pool. The basketball station taught girls to dribble the ball and shoot at the hoop. Along with the celebration of female athletes, the event also celebrated the faculty and staff of the university. The event had a great sense of girl power while honoring women in the university’s athletic programs.
