Andrew Lam ’13: Alpha Kappa Psi President

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at American chapter.

Andrew Lam: not just another AU kid from New Jersey.

This Kogod senior specializing in accounting is the 2012-2013 president of Alpha Kappa Psi, the professional business fraternity.

Lam joined Alpha Kappa Psi during the spring of his freshman year. He credits the people, mission and balance between social and professional aspects of the organization as the reason he joined. After serving as Vice President of Professional Development and Vice President of Membership, he was elected president last spring. “I saw a lot of potential in the organization,” he said. “I recognized the room for growth and the opportunity for me to develop my own skills and transform the organization.” As president, he leads a chapter of nearly 70 members, oversees an executive board of 11 and assists in the planning of professional events for the student body.

Besides hanging out with his AKPsi brothers in Kogod, his main interests include music, food and traveling. Last fall, Lam studied abroad on the London Internship Program, where he worked at a music publishing firm. While abroad, he had the opportunity to travel around Europe. He went everywhere from Rome and Madrid to Glasgow and Munich, but his favorite trips were to Paris and Oxford. For his next abroad adventure, Lam wants to go to Thailand and Malaysia. “I want to ride an elephant through the jungle in Thailand,” he said.

On campus, he has hosted a radio show on WVAU, helped plan Relay For Life at AU as a committee chair and served as a Resident Assitant. Currently, Lam interns in the accounting department of EJF Real Estate Services, where he has worked for a year and a half. His favorite part about interning at EJF is collaborating with his coworkers, who are all knowledgeable, fun and supportive. He hopes to work in consulting after graduating in May.

His best professional advice? “Don’t wait around for doors to open, make doors open for you.” he said. “Create opportunities for yourself and knock down the walls that get in your way. Once you open those doors, you’ll reap the benefits instantly.”
