Meet Study Abroad Sachs ’18

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Agnes Scott chapter.

Name: Emma Sachs

Hometown: Warrenton, Virginia

Major: English Literature – Creative Writing

Dream Job: Something in the publishing field

Favorite TV Show: A tie between Parks and Rec and Stranger Things

Her Campus: What would you put as your interests on a fake dating profile?:

Emma Sachs: Now you’re asking the hard questions…I guess I would put something deep and cultured like independent, foreign documentaries. Just so it balances out the overall nerdiness of the rest of it.

HC: You’re studying abroad in Scotland! Why did you choose Scotland? Were you considering any other countries?

ES: I knew I definitely wanted to go somewhere with a really great literary history since all the classes I would be taking were English. And obviously, I wanted to go somewhere that was beautiful, so Scotland quickly became my top choice. I also looked at the Czech Republic, Ireland, and the Netherlands as backup options, but I am so happy I get to be here.

HC: What has been your best and your worst experience studying abroad?

ES: My best experience so far has probably been the day I got to go to the beach. It was so gorgeous, and the area didn’t feel touristy at all.

My worst experience would definitely be my first day of classes. It’s a twenty-minute walk from my flat to the campus where my classes are, and right when I got there I accidently spilled water all over myself. So I had to spend the whole first day pretending like my socks weren’t making that terrible, wet squishy sound every time I moved.

HC: What is one of your best memories of your first year at Agnes?

ES: Oh, there are so many! There was a day in spring, right after all the trees started blooming.  We took a collection of bed sheets, towels and, and blankets outside, and sat behind Winship under those cherry blossom trees near the door to Alston. I don’t remember what we did or talked about, but I remember it was one of the first moments when I really felt like a college student. And it ended with us having a variety of races to see who could roll down that hill fastest, so that was also super fun.

HC: Do you have an Agnes bucket list? If so, what is on it?

ES: I don’t…but now that I only have two semester’s left, I am starting to make a “do before I graduate” bucket list. That one is just filled with everything we made plans to do first year, but still haven’t actually gotten around to doing. I think number one on the list is to go out for a really nice galentine’s brunch.

HC: If you could save the world from one thing, what would it be?

ES: Trump. But I kind of feel like that’s cheating because that would save it from several things….

HC: Where do you find strength in life?

ES: My mom because she is the kindest and sassiest person anyone could ever meet, Meg Ryan/Tom Hanks rom coms, and dark chocolate.

HC: Finally, what are you looking forward to this week?

ES: This coming week is our mid-semester week off, so I’m actually going to have time to do some sightseeing so that is going to fantastic!
