3 Cooking Essentials for Kitchenless Dorm Living

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Agnes Scott chapter.

Living the dorm life can be tough. Communal showers, loud neighbors, and hall meetings can be extremely annoying, especially when you see that one girl who stole your ice cream giving you the stink eye at the meetings.

The biggest struggle for me when moving into the dorm was living without a kitchen. For many students, the dorms have a community kitchen that allows for light cooking on electric stove tops. Unfortunately for me, our dorm- erected in 1902- doesn’t have air conditioning, let alone a functional stove. I was met with the reality of no home cooked meals for an entire semester. Tragic, I know.

But worry not, there are ways that you can surviveㅡ with a little help from my favorite tools.

The initial investment in these tools will be a great help in your future.

  1. Personal Coffee Maker

This gadget works wonders for any coffee lover out there. I like to start my day with a cup of Joe. But my coffee maker also helps out if I ever need boiling water. Take a cup of ramen and add some boiling waterㅡ BAM! You’ve got yourself a meal without the treck to the Dining Hall.

  2. Slow Cooker

I absolutely LOVE my slow cooker. One of my favorite things to make is my mom’s Chicken and Dumplings. All you need is four simple ingredients: chicken breasts, cream of chicken soup, biscuits, and Mrs. Dash. Set it around lunch time and have a yummy home cooked meal to break up your busy weekday.

  3. Pressure Cooker

Okay, so this gadget is a little odd. Not a lot of people use this technology, but it changes the game. If I’m ever in the mood for some fluffy Basmati rice or a yummy winter stew, the Pressure Cooker pulls through. In the morning, I can set up Irish Steel Cut oats and have a warm scrumptious breakfast to take on my day.
