Think Before You Fat-Shame

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Adelphi chapter.

Girls are known for being completely vain and obsessed with body image? But why? Society puts an abnormal amount of pressure on both guys and girls to look a certain way. The ideal guy is seen as muscular, lean, with a tiny body-fat percentage while us girls are supposed to be slender because that’s the standard for beautiful. But our current society has gone out of hand in order to promote unrealistic and unhealthy goals for young women.

It just seems like girls comment on other girls’ bodies without even thinking nowadays. Unless you’re absolutely sure you’re not offending somebody, you should keep any kind of remotely negative remark to yourself. What may seem like an innocent statement to you may make somebody else feel small and insecure. Unless you are in that person’s shoes and mindset, you don’t know their past or present. You don’t know what they’re secretly insecure about. You don’t know what may set them off. Therefore it’s best to keep any unnecessary comments to yourself, unless its a definite compliment. What may seem like a positive comment may be interpreted the wrong way. Personally, as somebody who’s been running for years, a popular remark that I get from people is “oh my gosh, you have so much muscle on your legs,” without even thinking that maybe my legs are the first part of my body that I would change if I could. It’s easy to get caught up in the moment and experience “word vomit” but remember that things can be taken in so many different ways and one little comment you make can forever change a person’s mindset.

Weight does not define beauty. The size of your jeans or your body-fat percentage does not play a role in whether or not you’re beautiful. This is because you’re beautiful despite all the numbers, statistics, and opinions of others. Human beings radiate from the inside out and confidence and kindness are two of the most beautiful things in the world. So before you decide to make a nasty comment in regards to somebody’s physical appearance, remember that you’re only making yourself appear ugly – not them. Although I believe everyone should be encouraged to be at a healthy weight and maintain a nutritious diet and a regular workout routine, every female is beautiful the way they’re created.

It’s easy to get caught up in all the images of the air-brushed models and the fad diets that seem to be “all the rage” right now. But the first step of true beauty is to embrace yourself and to set out to be the best version of you – not somebody else.

Hey everyone! I'm Juls (yes, short for Julie), and I'm a junior biology major with a double minor in chemistry and mathematics at Adelphi University. I'm also a writer and the head of the editorial team for Her Campus Adelphi. I've been running for 6 years and am a (beginner) Bikram yoga junkie, so I guess you can say I'm also a fitness enthusiast. If I'm not out for a run or in the yoga studio, you can catch me volunteering at my local hospital, laughing with my friends while out for coffee, or tuning in for the latest episode of Dancing With the Stars. Feel free to say hi if you see me around; I'm most likely that girl with a pair of sunglasses on top of her head even if it's cloudy outside.
