Ski Trip? Snow Problem

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Aberdeen chapter.

Ski Trip? Snow Problem.  Your packing essentials for being a ski bunny on the slopes!

It’s that time of year again!  ‘Tis the (ski) season. With the abundance of Instagram hashtags like #gettingpiste or #snowplowsandfreshpow (a personal favourite), it’s easy to get yourself hyped about giving it hell on your week at Alp D’huez. Having just got back from the uni ski trip to Val T, here’s my definitive packing list to cover you in all eventualities:

1)    Sunscreen/lip balm

Goggle ski tan. We’ve all been there, so from experience, it’s best to avoid having an ombrè face for two weeks. There’s handy pocket sized sunscreens that are perfect to cover your nose from the UV rays, AND some of them come with a nifty lip balm at the bottom, cause who wants chapped lips whilst they’re trying to flirt at après? Manbi tend to sell them for around £7, not too shabby for a two-in-one.

2)    Ski socks It sounds obvious but believe me, having upgraded my socks from last year, I felt like a new woman. The key is good quality socks that you can feel yourself wearing every day for a week. Mine are personally from Trespass, but if you’re feeling in a ‘treat yo self’ kinda mood, Rab do merino wool socks are perfectly fluffy and fabulous. Hit up the sales! I managed to get two pairs of socks for the price of one (every penny saved is a penny towards your 9€ vodka mixer….).

3)    Fancy Dress

If like me you were on a university ski trip (so edgy, I know), without a doubt you’ll be given a list of at least 4 different fancy dress costumes you’ve gotta buy or make, then trek to the Alps. Although normally I don’t like putting in minimal effort for fancy dress (yes the person in black with the cat ears, I’m talking to you), the reality of lugging elaborate costumes is difficult. So, my suggestion is to go large with the accessories; animal ears and tails, feather boas and masks, face paint etc. They’re easy to bring with you and it means you can still wrap up extra warm to keep the –13 degrees chill out.

4)Sunglasses and hat

With the risk of sounding like a basic white girl, my sunnies and bobble hat really saved me whilst I wasn’t actually skiing. Come snow or shine, it’s gonna be bright and chilly regardless and let’s be honest, nobody wants to be wearing their helmet and goggles when they don’t actually have to. With a cute little bobble hat, coupled with a pair of decent sunglasses, the slopes are your oyster. If you’re not into hats, a fluffy headband or oversized buff can keep you warm without swallowing up your face.

5)    Hipflask

An alpine night out essential. Let’s be honest, with the average pint price at 7€ and the vodka mixer (I’m talking a splash of cranberry at a push) being 9€, ain’t nobody got time for buying drinks all night. Make sure you bring a little hippy with you in your suitcase and as long as it’s well-hidden and you’re sly about using it, you can party all night long without spending 80€ on three drinks. Urban Outfitters is my go to, cause what’s cuter than a pink sparkly hipflask for only £12?

Student at Aberdeen University studying French and Spanish, anything pink and sparkly and I'm sold.
