Gun violence is a difficult issue that the United States has been dealing with for a very long time. After another tragic mass shooting that took place on February 14th, 2018 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, a group of students who survived the massacre started an organisation under the name of Never Again MSD (referring to the name of the school) to advocate for tighter gun control. Working quickly to get as much attention from the media as possible following the shooting aftermath, the student-led initiative quickly turned into a nationwide movement, inspiring people all over the world to protest against gun violence. On March 24nd, in cooperation with the non-profit organisation Everytown for Gun Safety, the members of Never Again MSD conducted “March for Our Lives,” a demonstration that gathered an estimated 1.2 to 2 million people in Washington, D.C. and in sibling events all over the United States. Under the slogans “Enough is enough” and “We call BS” and supported by numerous celebrities, politicians and corporations, it became one of the largest protests in American history. The demonstrators demanded passing a law to ban assault weapons, prohibiting the sale of high-capacity magazines and closing the loophole in America’s background checks by implementing laws that require checks on every gun sale – no exceptions. After the massive success of the march, we can only hope it will yield the change that everyone so much awaits.
