Girl Power!

It’s already been more than twenty years since Spiceworld was been released in theatres. I still remember when I went with my dad to watch the movie. I loved it as a child and I still do, as I grew up when the Spice Girls were at the height of their fame. If you’re not familiar with the Spice Girls, then their song ‘Wannabe’ might ring a bell. The group was made up of five women: Scary Spice, Sporty Spice, Baby Spice, Ginger Spice, and Posh Spice. Mel B, Mel C, Emma, Gerry and Victoria embodied an archetype which so many women all over the world could relate to. My personal favourites were Baby Spice and Ginger Spice, and I even have the dolls! About two weeks ago, I started re-listening to the Spice Girls every day, especially ‘Do it’ and ‘Never Give Up On the Good Times’.

Something happened last week. I felt that I don’t always receive the support I need. I cried and few hours later  some of my fears manifested into a nightmare. Later I realized that actually I support people who ignore me, while I ignore people who support me. How many times do I have to fail or fall so that I can finally open my eyes,  face reality, and accept the truth? It was a minor incident,  but it caused insomnia and many painful feelings of self-doubt. It was not about not getting what you want, but how other people treat you. I could have left the room, but I stayed, listening to the Spice Girls to lift my mood.

Come on and do it Don’t care how you look, it’s just how you feel Come on and do it You gotta make it real Come on and do it It’s time to free what’s in your soul You gotta get it right, this time Come on, freak out, lose control

You might do the wrong thing (might do the wrong thing) for the right reasons (for the right reason) Don’t just do the right thing (don’t do the right thing) to be pleasing (to be pleasin’ baby)

If you’re in a bad mood or need some motivation, I would really recommend listening to the Spice Girls. Their lyrics are awesome and full of girl power, lifting you up. Listening to their songs feels like reflecting on your life, allowing you to see what you’re doing wrong and to grow from your experiences.

Finally, dancing is a creative form of self-expression that people have been doing for decades. It might sound strange, but the people who annoy me most or have hurt me make me want to dance. It’s like shaking off something that you don’t need, lifting a weight. I know now how to move on and invest my energy in meaningful projects and relationships.

Have fun listening to the Spice Girls!
