HC COLBY BLOG
Saturday, May 12, 2012
Dear Readers,
Thank you so much for sharing my adventure with me. I hope that my blog entries have given you insight as to what it’s like to be a foreign student in Israel and what it’s like to study abroad. For those of you who have studied abroad already, I’m sure you’ll agree with me when I say that it was an extremely valuable experience.
And for those of you who...

In contrast to my last few (okay, more than a few) depressing posts, this post is about happier stuff. As my semester is drawing to a close, I thought it would be appropriate and fun for me to list a few of my favorite things in Israel. To me, they’re things that only could have happened in Israel.
In no particular order…

Without question, this has been one of my favorite weeks of the semester. The weather is finally gorgeous; it’s so sunny out that I had to come inside to do this blog post, much to my dismay. Plus, I only had two days of classes this week. This is the life.
Tuesday night and Wednesday were Yom HaZikaron, or Fallen Soldiers Day. It’s kind of like Memorial Day to us, but more somber....

Thursday was Yom Hashoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day. As you can imagine, this day is taken very seriously in Israel. All stores and businesses were closed the night before for Erev Yom Hashoah, or night of Yom Hashoah. At 10 AM today, a siren blasted across the whole country for two minutes. During these two minutes, everything stops. If you’re walking, you stop and pause. If you’...

We’re deep into Spring semester and the finish line is in sight. With everything coming to a close you probably have a lot of pent up energy that you’re dying to release. So let the weekend come a little early and get out to bar night Thursday to let loose. Here is our guide to the glamorous Waterville bars.
Let’s start out with some basics for all the bars:

The Need for Help
Just two days ago, I was hanging out in a friend’s room when my roommate informed us that a rocket hit Eilat early in the morning. I checked my email and not surprisingly, received an alert about the situation. Fortunately, no casualties or damage were reported.
Because I intern at the Israeli Trauma Center, NATAL, I immediately thought about how the attack...

As I may have mentioned in previous blog posts, I am interning at in the development office at NATAL, the Israeli Trauma Center for Victims of War and Terror. Today, I walked into my boss’s office to show her the Passover campaign proposal my friend and I created. I couldn’t help but notice a drawing on the wall. I could tell from the stick figures and the coloring outside of the...

I distinctly remember one of the orientation meetings from the first week of my study abroad program. We met with a psychologist who works closely with our program.
“First, everything will be new and exciting. Then it will get old and annoying. And then it will be the last week and you’ll think about how much you have to do and you won’t feel ready to go,” he said...

If you didn’t know, we recently had women from the Lululemon showroom in Portland come to campus for an event. It was so much fun to have a pop-up shop at Colby since there is not many great places to shop in the area. We hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as we did; the clothes were adorable, the snacks were yummy, and the Campus Cutie nominations were aplenty. But did you get to find...

It’s crazy how fast time flies. I feel like I just got to Israel yesterday, but it’s already been over a month! Those of you who are abroad can relate to this feeling. It’s time to start planning more and more adventures.
With spring break coming up, I figured it would be a good idea to devote this blog post to travel suggestions for spring break. Since I have absolutely no...
