Chinese New Year at Bryn Mawr College
Wednesday, February 9, 2011
Happy Chinese New Year! It's the year of the Rabbit, and a group of Bryn Mawr students gathered at the SGA House to celebrate this festive holiday.... take a look.

Students get together to celebrate this year's Chinese New Year, the Year of the Rabbit.

At the celebration, students enjoyed homemade chinese soups.

Students from Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges come together to celebrate the new lunar year.

All smiles here as one student chows down on a delicious and traditional Chinese dish

Mr. Yonglin Jiang, visiting associate professor of East Asia Studies Department at Bryn Mawr College, joins students to celebrate this Chinese holiday

Bryn Mawr: Dye Life Colorful
Tuesday, November 16, 2010Sponsored by Bryn Mawr Art club and local Philadelphia artist Laura Cohn, the Bryn Mawr studio has hosted Batik Night on Wednesdays for three weeks. In the workshop, students learned and enjoyed the dying process using wax called Batik, originated from Indonesia. As the workshop has come to its conclusion, the colorful fabrics with various designs tell the fun, artisitic side of life at Bryn Mawr. Now let's take a look of the fun, creative Batik making process!

Step 1: Pick up Your Tools!
Various tools are used in the workshop. Although they are commonplace objects in our life, they are essential to creating different patterns on fabrics.

Step 2: Pinning the Fabrics
While wax in the two pots is heated and melting, each pins a piece of fabric on a recycled box that has its center cut out. By using a box as a platform, the waxed fabric will get be stuck onto the desk.

Step 3: Creating Your Own Pattern
Dipping the tools into wax and pressing them hard on the fabric---patterns are created and wherever is not waxed on the fabric will be dyed into colors.

Fun to Doodle!
Now a piece of work is done, set it aside and pick up another new piece!

Step 4: Dropping the Fabrics inside
The dye is made by adding color powder to clear water. Fabrics are put inside a bucket filled with diluted dye--Fabrics are going to come out as salmon color in the picture above!

Step 5: Keep Stirring
Stirring the fabrics back and forth to saturate them with dye.

Step 6: Batik Rainbow!
After stirring, rinsing and boiling fabrics in hot water to get rid of wax on them, hang them up and wait till they are dry

Final products!
After several times of dying, fabrics come up in colorful patterns.
Rally with Joe Sestak and Former President Bill Clinton
Tuesday, November 2, 2010On Thursday October 28th, the Bryn Mawr College Democrats organized a rally for Congressman Joe Sestak’s race for Senate, with special guest speaker Former President Clinton. The Counterpoints, a Bi-College Acappella group, performed before the speakers took the stage. Attendees were first introduced to Manan Trivedo (PA District 6 Candidate), followed by Congressman Joe Sestak and Former President Bill Clinton. President Clinton, along with the other two politicians, spoke about important issues like the health-care reform bill, partisan politics, the stimulus package, and education. The event was successful, and motivated students to participate in the Midterm Election on Tuesday, November 2nd.
The rally took place on Merion Green. Local members of the Bryn Mawr community as well as college faculty, staff, and students awaited the
Former President.
Congressman Joe Sestak and Former President Bill Clinton take the stage.
Joe Sestak spoke before Former President Bill Clinton, and talked passionately about what he believes Pennsylvania needs now.
The two politicians have worked together before; Congressman Joe Sestak once served on the former president’s National Security Council when he was a three-star admiral in the Navy. Sestak joked about Former President Clinton being his "boss."

The Former President spoke from experience, and expressed his trust that Sestak is capable of getting things done as Senator.
The speech Clinton gave was educational and captivating, and he was ever so charismatic despite having spoken at numerous events over the past week.
Before he left, the Former President stopped to speak personally with students. He explained that the youth turnout in this midterm election could be only 55%, which may drastically affect the outcome of the race. Our presence is needed on Tuesday.

Spotted: Her Campus Bryn Mawr's own Jaselle Yrizarry-Pabon, a former intern for the Clinton Foundation, working behind the scenes at the rally.
